dissent verb
1: to withhold assent or approval
2: to differ in opinion (Three of the justices dissented from
the majority opinion.)
dissent noun
difference of opinion (heard voices of dissent at the
meeting): such as
a: religious nonconformity (permitted no dissent from
church teachings)
b law: a justice's nonconcurrence with a decision of the
majority (cited an earlier case in her dissent — called also
dissenting opinion)
c: political opposition to a government or its policies
“Dissents speak to a future age. It's not
simply to say, 'My colleagues are wrong
and I would do it this way.' But the
greatest dissents do become court
opinions and gradually over time their
views become the dominant view. So
that's the dissenter's hope: that they are
writing not for today, but for tomorrow.”
