Sustainable Development -Goal 8 United Nations Convention for the Rights of People with Disabilities Article 27 Focuses on work and employment for all people with disability and summits that: States Parties recognize the right of people with disabilities to work, on an equal basis with others; this includes the right to the opportunity to gain a living by work freely chosen or accepted in a labour market and work environment that is open, inclusive and accessible to persons with disabilities. Both Goal 8 & The UNCRPD relate to each other as they focus on the employment and economic participation of people with disabilities. Giving them an equal opportunity to sustain their livelihoods and that of their families.
- 6. Sustainable Development -Goal 8 Vulnerability It is known that people with disability are the most vulnerable group when it comes to opportunities of employment. One of the most vicious forms of inequality relates to inequality of opportunity based on where you find yourself . It is this lack of opportunity that exacerbates the challenges of people with disability within the workplace and disables them from sustaining their livelihoods. Other contributing factors areโฆ Palmer (2011) Summits that there is a close relationship between poverty and disability. The discrimination faced by people with disabilities within the workplace adds to the challenges of people with disability and leads to/increases poverty. The concept of โoverlapping inequalitiesโ (Bhatkal, Samman & Stuart 2015) recognises the social exclusions and marginalisation experienced by vulnerable groups experienced by society because of their conditions. These conditions โseparateโ them from society and ignore their basic rights and needs. Minority groups are โautomatically excluded as their needs are not โprioritised โ

Sustainable Development -Goal 8 Lack of education/inadequate education/no support contribute to the barriers faced within the workplace/employment opportunity People with disabilities are most likely to be excluded due to โjob specksโ Based on gender โ females are less likely to: Have lower or no education at all Find employment than their male counterparts Have a lower income than their male counterparts Face abuse within the workplace/human trafficking/face prostitution Based on gender โ females are less likely to find employment than their male counterparts Discrimination & Inequality is further exacerbated by their environments and the attitudes of their communities.
- 8. Frameworks should thereforebe focused on the basic rights of the person thereby reverting the focus from the disability. A holistic approach will ensure we create decent work for all women and men which automatically include people with disabilities. French (1993) summits that The perspective of the Medical model is that persons with disability are unable to work and excluded due to the inability of their bodies. Sustainable Development - Goal 8 People with disability has been left at the mercy of the state creating a dependency on state grants keeping them in impoverished conditions.

Sustainable Development -Goal 8 Resilience Regardless of the marginalisation people with disabilities find themselves in they have continued to show resilience in the face of oppression and marginalisation in the workplace. People with disabilities have managed to make ends meet through being creative Eg. My mom has supplemented her state income through knitting doilies My father does gardening Lobbying - Using lawful means to influence stakeholders โ i.e. Involved in politics, networking, writing letters Advocacy โ Started their own DPOโs - Speaking up and drawing attention to the important measures they face Communication โ Motivating others to stand up for themselves and bring about collective transformation and elimination of attitudinal barriers โ bringing about positive change
- 10. Sustainable Development -Goal 8 Processes Persons with disabilities have first-hand experience of the challenges they face and best understand their needs. They possess a wealth of knowledge of problem-solving abilities to contribute to the Sustainable Development Agenda and it is therefore important that their voices come through in the SDG and UNCRDP.(Nothing about them without them). Inclusion of faith based organisations in the development of people with disabilities thereby eradicating negative attitudes and stigmas towards people with disabilities Creating more employment opportunities within the public sector for people with disabilities โ gender mainstreaming is also an important aspect Build special schools that will accommodate the different disabilities and thereby giving recognition to the skills of people with disability

Sustainable Development -Goal 8 Processes Include people with disabilities on the planning and implementation of policies thereby giving recognition to the experiences of people with disabilities. Their insight is vital if we are to promote and protect the rights. Involve and support Disability Organisations in programmes undertaken by government and other stakeholders to ensure the implementation of the UNCRPD and SDG 8 It is important for people with disabilities to take ownership and a leadership role within projects so as to ensure that their voices and opinions are being filtered through. Monitoring process that will capture progress/feedback of people with disability within the workplace and how having meaningful employment has contributed to creating improved livelihoods for people with disabilities
- 12. Sustainable Development -Goal 8 Assets Natural capital: The most important resources a family or community has available to sustain their livelihood. Natural skills i.e fishing, gardening what they have always had to sustain them Social Political capital: Social interrelationships a family has which supports them in sustaining their livelihoods, Eg DPO, church, social groups etc Human capital: Skills, knowledge, health of a family that helps them support or maintain their livelihood Physical capital: basic access /infrastructure for transportation, water, electricity, management that enableโs a person to pursue his/her livelihood Financial Capital: Available financial resources (credit card, savings, social grants) that help them sustain their livelihood.
