Screening for gestational diabetes should be performed for all pregnant women between 24-28 weeks of gestation, and earlier for those with risk factors. Risk factors include family history of diabetes, past gestational diabetes, older age, obesity, and certain ethnicities. An initial 50g glucose challenge test screens for high blood sugar, and abnormal results require a 100g oral glucose tolerance test to diagnose gestational diabetes. Regular monitoring during pregnancy looks for complications in both mother and baby.
