1) The document describes the process of creating a contents page and double page spread for a magazine in QuarkXPress.
2) Key steps included adding borders, images, lines and text using various tools to layout the pages and section content.
3) Colors, fonts and positioning of elements were adjusted to link the design across pages and appeal to a target female audience.
2. First I opened QuarkXPress and made a new
document for my contents page.
3. Rectangle
box tool
Then using the ‘rectangle box tool’ from
the tool bar I created a border around the
page.
4. Next I double clicked on the box so that I could
make the frame thicker and changed it to 4pt.
5. Picture
tool Then I inserted images by going to the ‘picture tool’
on the tool bar. I double clicked the square with the
cross in and selected the images I wanted on my
contents page.
6. I decided I wanted to have borders around the
images, so using the rectangle box tool I dragged it
around the images and then right clicked and went to
modify.
7. I changed the width to 4pt and the colour to ‘Cyan’
as it is a bright blue colour connoting calmness and
links to my cover page.
8. Move
tool Next I positioned the borders and
images around the page using the
‘move tool’.
9. Text
Line I wanted the columns to be clear so I created black tool
tool lines using the ‘line tool’ to section the page into
three columns for the articles. I also added page
numbers by using the ‘text tool’ on the toolbar.
10. Picture
tool Like before I inserted the image of a
snowflake which I had edited in Photoshop
and duplicated it to divide the columns.
11. Text After that using the ‘text tool’ I started writing the
tool article headings and a small amount of information
underneath. I also added an editors letter to make
the magazine personal.
12. Then using the ‘text tool’ I created the title ‘contents and wrote
the issue, date and the name of the magazine at the top. The
font I used was stencil as I that was previously used for the cover
page. I changed the size to 75pt and added a light blue drop
shadow to the lettering.
13. This is the finished
contents page for
Recent Magazine.
15. After making my contents page I started to create a double
page spread for my magazine. I went on ‘page layout’ and
dragged two new pages underneath ‘A’ so that I had them
facing each other.
16. Next I inserted images from Photoshop which I had
found using a search engine. I wanted the layout of the
leaves to look quite scattered and care free so that it
reflected the artist featured.
17. After that I used the ‘text tool’ to add the title of the page
and the artists name down the side. I decided to use two
main colours black and orange to contrast the white
background and link to the bright orange leaves.
18. Next using the ‘rectangle box tool’ I created a
rectangle so that I could lay the text from the
interview on top.
19. I changed the fill colour to pink on the rectangle by right
clicking and going to >modify > box tab, changing the
colour. I did this to link with the cover page and contents
page which relates to my female target audience.
20. Then I imported the main image of the artist
featured which I had edited on Photoshop and
made into a JPG image.
21. After that I added the text in from the interview and
changed the font colours to black, purple and blue so
that it was clear when Corinna and the magazine
interviewer was speaking.
22. Due to the text overlapping the artist’s legs I wanted the
page to look professional so I went to Modify > Run around
and changed the type to item added 3pt to the top. This
would allow the text to go around the image.
23. Using the ‘text tool’ again I added pull quotes from the
main article to grab the reader’s attention. I clicked on the
text box and went to modify > Run around again, so that
they can move freely around the text.
24. Finally after finishing the double page spread and
contents page, I went to File > Export > Layout as PDF so
that I could import it into Photoshop and save it as a
JPG.
25. This is the finished double page spread for Recent
Magazine.
