Syndetic designs and Manufactures specialised, complex and high reliability equipment. Equipment
designed and manufactured by Syndetic is used in a range of critical applications including large
communications satellite earth stations, Search and Rescue satellite EPIRB receiving ground stations
and underground coal mines.
Syndetic is the authorised global repair centre for Codan digital microwave links.
Syndetic is based in Yeronga Brisbane and has a staff of 8, including 5 engineers. We have a broad
range of experience in the design and manufacture of high reliability electronic equipment with
special expertise in the areas of microwave and RF engineering. We maintain an accredited ISO-
9001 quality system.
In the resources sector, Syndetic manufactures several items including:
 Electrical system that permits diesel vehicles to enter underground coal mines,
 Wireless monitoring system that measures the voltages in a copper refinery tank house.
 Equipment to continuously measure the concentration of copper dissolved in sulfuric acid.
In the rural arena, Syndetic designed and manufactures the control unit for the Nutridose system
(http://nutridose.com.au/). The system includes satellite based remote monitoring and control via
a Syndetic programmed and hosted web database system.
In the communications sector, Syndetic manufactures hardware and software systems used in large
satellite earth stations including the Optus hub at Belrose in Sydney and the Telstra station in Perth..

UAV Communications Equipment
Syndetic designed and manufactured a communications
package for a UAV and the ground station. The design involved
meeting strict specifications for size, weight & reliability.
Complex high speed electronic design
This is one example showing the design and manufacture of
a 16 layer PCB with a Xilinx Kintex 7 FPGA.
Syndetic also have experience with VHDL Programming
Antenna design
From wide band 2-18GHz log periodic shown left to antenna
arrays 24GHz patch array shown right, Syndetic design,
simulate, build and test a variety of antennas for specialist
applications.
Satellite Ground Station Equipment
Used by both Optus and Telstra in their large satellite ground-
station hubs. Syndetic designed and manufactures critical
equipment including redundancy control systems and transmit
power controllers (compensates for rain fades on the uplink
path). This equipment includes high reliability hardware and
sophisticated software algorithms.

Remote Monitoring
Syndetic team a commercial satellite modem with Syndetic
hardware and software to provide farmers the ability to
control and monitor equipment remotely. This includes a
feed supplement dosing system also supplied by Syndetic,
tank level, gate opening, vehicle movement monitoring and
so on.
Wireless Connectivity
Wireless sensor in chemical proof housing with custom
communications protocol that allows 1000 sensors to operate in
a plant. (8 year battery life).
Bluetooth LE hardware & Software and Mobile App for the
control and display of data.

Frank Thomson

Owner / Director
Frank Thomson graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Engineering in
1985. From 1985 to 1999 he worked at MITEC performing a number of roles including RF design
engineer, Manager of the microwave link department, Project Manager for various commercial,
space and military projects, and Marketing Manager for microwave video link products.
Mitec was bought by Codan and Frank continued his roles under the Codan ownership. In 1999 he
formed Syndetic PTY LTD.
Dr Ross Varnes
PhD, BEng
Chief Engineer
Ross Varnes graduated from the University of Southern Queensland with a Bachelor of Engineering
in 1991 and from the University of Queensland with a PhD in 1998. From 1996 to 2006 he worked
for Mitec, and later Codan, performing a number of roles including R & D Engineer, RF Design
Engineer, Team Leader of the Solid State Power Amplifier (SSPA) engineering team and lead
engineer for Microwave Links products. These roles have provided design experience with passive
and active circuits, thermal design and compliance engineering for safety and EMC.
Ross is the chief engineer at Syndetic and oversees the engineering design team.
Ross has skills in RF design and simulation. He is proficient in using RF simulation CAD tools including
CST and Agilent Genesys. Ross is also skilled in PCB layout and mechanical design.
