package for a UAV and the ground station. The design involved
meeting strict specifications for size, weight & reliability.
Complex high speed electronic design

a 16 layer PCB with a Xilinx Kintex 7 FPGA.

From wide band 2-18GHz log periodic shown left to antenna

Satellite Ground Station Equipment
Used by both Optus and Telstra in their large satellite ground-
station hubs. Syndetic designed and manufactures critical
equipment including redundancy control systems and transmit
power controllers (compensates for rain fades on the uplink
path). This equipment includes high reliability hardware and
sophisticated software algorithms.

Remote Monitoring
Syndetic team a commercial satellite modem with Syndetic
hardware and software to provide farmers the ability to
control and monitor equipment remotely. This includes a
feed supplement dosing system also supplied by Syndetic,
tank level, gate opening, vehicle movement monitoring and

Wireless sensor in chemical proof housing with custom
communications protocol that allows 1000 sensors to operate in

Frank Thomson graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Engineering in
1985. From 1985 to 1999 he worked at MITEC performing a number of roles including RF design
engineer, Manager of the microwave link department, Project Manager for various commercial,
space and military projects, and Marketing Manager for microwave video link products.
Mitec was bought by Codan and Frank continued his roles under the Codan ownership. In 1999 he
formed Syndetic PTY LTD.
Dr Ross Varnes

Chief Engineer
Ross Varnes graduated from the University of Southern Queensland with a Bachelor of Engineering
in 1991 and from the University of Queensland with a PhD in 1998. From 1996 to 2006 he worked
for Mitec, and later Codan, performing a number of roles including R & D Engineer, RF Design
Engineer, Team Leader of the Solid State Power Amplifier (SSPA) engineering team and lead
engineer for Microwave Links products. These roles have provided design experience with passive
and active circuits, thermal design and compliance engineering for safety and EMC.
Ross is the chief engineer at Syndetic and oversees the engineering design team.
Ross has skills in RF design and simulation. He is proficient in using RF simulation CAD tools including
CST and Agilent Genesys. Ross is also skilled in PCB layout and mechanical design.
