    coat of arms of Scotland
At the beginning of the 6th
century, Scotland was ruled by
Scottish kings and queens, but
was divided between different
groups of people: the Picts and
Celts, who were the oldest
inhabitants, the Scots, who
came from Northern Ireland, the
Britons, and the Angles.
Today Scotland is a part of the United
Kingdom and is governed from London.
There is a special minister in the
Government, the Secretary of
State for Scotland, who is
responsible for education, local
government and other important
matters in Scotland.
Scotland occupies a vast territory of about 79,000 square
kilometres, but the population of Scotland is only five million
                          people.

There are many rivers in
Scotland, but they are not
long. The longest and the
most important Scottish
river is the Clyde.
The biggest and the most beautiful
lake in Scotland is Loch Lomond
The most famous one is Loch Ness with its
mysterious monster Nessie
One of the first things that people
associate with Scotland is the kilt. The kilt
is only worn by men and it is a relic of the
time when the clan system existed in
Scottish Highlands.
The clan had its particular territory and
was governed by a chieftain. Each
clan had its own chequered pattern of
tartan, which both men and women
wore. There are about 300 different
clans in Scotland, and each has its
own colour and pattern of tartan
together with the motto.
