Kingdom. Scotland is a diverse group of peoples
and languages with a long history of war and
invasion.
13. Scotland merged with England in 1707 to form the
United Kingdom of Great Britain. Scotland and England
shared a king from 1603. Relations have long been
dif

Scottish and English history are intertwined, Scotland
has long refused to think of itself as anything other
than a separate and distinct country.
14. For centuries, there was
continual strife between

15. The people of the Shetland and Orkney islands
tend to be apart from both the Celtic and Anglo-
Saxon cultures around them. They look to

16. Many of the things we think of as distinctly
Scottish today are a part of Gaelic Highland
culture. The Highlands had a unique system of
being ruled: through clans. Clans were farming
communities, led by a chief. They had a shared
identity, tartan and surname in each group.
17. During a dark era of Scottish
history, landlords evicted the
farmers of the highlands.
During the Highland
Clearances (1750-1860) some
went to look for work in
cities like Glasgow, but many
Highlanders left Scotland to
start new lives in countries
such as Canada, America,
Australia and New Zealand.
This spread Scottish highland
culture around the world.
