This document discusses tuberculosis (TB), its management and treatment strategies in Indonesia. It provides definitions and background on TB, noting it is a bacterial infection that can be difficult to diagnose, especially in children. It requires long-term multi-drug therapy that some have issues adhering to, and drug resistance is a concern. TB management in Indonesia involves both public and private healthcare providers using national guidelines. Sub-standard TB care can lead to misdiagnosis, mistreatment, poor patient outcomes, continued transmission, and the development of drug resistance. The DOTS strategy developed by WHO involves standardized short-course treatment regimens directly observed by healthcare workers to improve adherence and outcomes. It has proven effective globally in treating over 56 million

The document discusses the launch of a science shop called "Science ensemble" at the Institut Pasteur de Tunis in Tunisia. The science shop aims to increase engagement between civil society and research institutions to help address societal challenges. For its first project, the science shop received 36 project submissions from civil society organizations looking to collaborate with scientific laboratories. This strong interest from Tunisian CSOs signals they are ready to co-create solutions with researchers. However, establishing the science shop also faces challenges like lack of existing connections between civil society and researchers and ensuring sustainability.

The document summarizes the establishment of the first Tunisian Science Shop at the Tunisian Pasteur Institute. It discusses how the 2011 revolution in Tunisia led to a more active civil society and responsive research and innovation system. The Science Shop facilitates collaborative research projects between civil society organizations and students to address social issues. As an example, it describes a project studying hepatitis C virus prevalence among intravenous drug users to help increase access to diagnosis and treatment for this marginalized group. Upcoming activities for the Science Shop include diversifying partnerships and needs assessments to promote participatory innovation and equity in science. Challenges include sustaining the Science Shop beyond its initial funding period.

The National University of Singapore (NUS) is partnering with the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND) to develop a novel point-of-care diagnostic test for tuberculosis (TB) detection. NUS researchers have identified specific mycolic acid biomarkers in sputum samples that can distinguish active TB infections from non-infections or cured cases. NUS will work to develop antibodies to these biomarkers for use in an immunoassay-based diagnostic test, while FIND will provide expertise to develop the test into a product. The goal is to make TB diagnosis more affordable, easy-to-use, and accurate for use in resource-limited settings.

This document summarizes several social innovations in healthcare that are improving outcomes in Africa. It profiles initiatives like Mobile Xhosa, which provides medical translations to help doctors communicate with patients, and a modular training program for cardiologists in Sierra Leone to address the specific needs of that country. The document discusses how inclusive healthcare innovation starts with understanding problems from patients' perspectives and developing creative solutions. It highlights innovations created by frontline healthcare workers who best understand community needs.
The document discusses Horizon 2020, the EU's research and innovation program from 2014-2020. It summarizes that Horizon 2020 brings together separate previous programs, couples research and innovation, and focuses on societal challenges like health and ageing. It allocates over 7 billion euros for health, demographic change and wellbeing initiatives. These initiatives aim to translate science to benefit citizens, improve health outcomes, support healthcare sectors, and test new health models through areas like innovative medicines, clinical trials, assisted living, and active ageing.
Horizon 2020 is the largest EU Research and Innovation programme in existence, with nearly €80 billion of funding on hand over the course of 7 years (2014 to 2020). Our initiative is to remove hurdles between the lab and the market, to allow for a fluid transition of innovation to the public’s access. What follow are some of our recent endeavors in making the world a more progressive place.
The document summarizes several promising practices related to responsible research and innovation (RRI) from countries in South-Eastern Europe. It describes RRI initiatives focused on developing ICT solutions for agriculture, creating a socially aware citizen-centric internet of things, developing bioethical standards through community workshops, and bringing science closer to the public through educational outreach. The practices engage a variety of stakeholders, including researchers, businesses, government, and civil society organizations, in developing responsible innovations that meet community needs.

Since the revolution in 2011, Tunisia witnessed the rise of a very active civil society involved in the

In order to ensure real involvement of all the stakeholders, we adopted a co-creation process
conducted by representative research centers, CSO’s and universities. We have launched
a call to collect needs from the civil society. 36 social needs were submitted by different
CSO’s. The selection committee included CSO representatives as well as local experts.
It is a very strong signal that Tunisian CSO’s are ready to co-create with scientific laboratories
to tackle their societal challenges.
For the first year, we decided to perform one pilot project. This pilot project was born from a
demand formulated by a local CSO : the Tunisian Association for Information and Orientation on
HIV/AIDS and Toxicomania (ATIOST) who proposed to work on the “Genetic characterization
of circulating Hepatitis C (HCV) virus strains among injecting drug users in Tunisia”.
The knowledge of hepatitis C genotypes among (IDU) is an important step in
the diagnosis of HCV infection and a key component of therapeutic decision.
The results of this collaborative project will give a scientific contribution to the design of effective
national strategie for the control and the eradication of hepatitis C in Tunisia.
