Science Safety Guidelines
Read The Instructions Before You Start Be sure you understand each lab before you begin. Ask for HELP if you do not understand the procedures or are not sure how to handle a chemical If you feel uncomfortable doing something… DON’T DO IT! IT’S BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY!!!!...
Clean up all Messes Immediately This isn’t a pig pen The lab area should be clean and clear of all clutter If the lab area is not clean you must clean the area before you begin the experiment Leave the lab area clean for the next class
Handle Chemicals Properly Be sure to handle and dispose of chemicals carefully. Avoid breathing or coming into contact with these substances. They may be easily absorbed through the skin and mucus membranes. Always wear gloves and your goggles
Fire Safety Skills If there is a fire notify your teacher Smother the blaze with a fire blanket or use a fire extinguisher If you catch on fire REMEMBER: Stop, Drop, and Roll. Never run; it adds oxygen to the fire, making it burn faster.
Protect Your Skin Wear protective gloves whenever working with chemicals. If a chemical happens to spill on your skin notify the teacher and flush the area with water for 15 minutes. If irritation occurs have the school nurse and your parents look at it. If you go to the doctor take all the information about the chemical with you
Save Your Nosehairs Waft If you need to smell a chemical as part of a lab activity, hold it 6 to 10 inches below and way from you nose. Wave your hand over the opening of the container “wafting” some of the fumes toward you. Wafting allows you to safely smell some of the fumes without exposing you to large doses.
Lose the Comedy Routine Horseplay can lead to injury to your classmates or yourself. Chemicals may be spilled leading to random genetic mutations, accidental fires may be started, glass may get broken, and equipment may be damaged. No running, punching, or shoving during lab time
No Eating During Lab When you put food in your mouth that has been lying around in the lab area, you run the risk of possible ingesting a poison. If the lab calls for you to eat something be sure that the lab area, your hands, and the equipment that you are using are clean
Organize Your Lab Follow directions Learn how and where everything goes. All lab equipment has a specific place where it is stored. It will help the next lab group
Basic Lab Guidelines Use common sense when working with science equipment and materials. Be alert and proceed with caution when doing a science experiment. Keep accurate records of your experiment. Wear the proper safety equipment such as goggles or glasses and rubber gloves, when needed.
Roll up long sleeves above the elbow before doing a science experiment. Tie back long hair before doing a science experiment. Never taste any materials (unless specifically directed by the teacher) Only touch and manipulate materials as directed by the teacher.
When using any substance, keep your hands away from your face and wash your hands after touching any substance. Avoid bumping into others while working on experiments. Stay in your assigned place until all tasks are completed. Keep the work area free of spilled materials. Share in cleaning up materials after experiment is completed. Follow these safety guidelines when repeating experiments at home or elsewhere.
