Safety Rules
of
the Lab
Be respectful, follow your
teacher's instructions, and
don't take shortcuts.
When first entering a science
room, do not touch any equipment,
chemicals, or other materials in the
laboratory area until you are
instructed to do so.
Do not operate the gas
burner without the
permission of your teacher
Long hair (chin-length or longer)
must be tied back to avoid
catching fire.
Work quietly — know what you are
doing by reading the assigned
experiment before you start to
work.
Never return unused
chemicals to the original
container.
Never remove chemicals or
other materials from the
laboratory area.
Do not taste or smell chemicals.
Do not attempt to change the position
of glass tubing in a stopper.
Never point a test tube being
heated at another student or
yourself. Never look into a test
tube while you are heating it.
Unauthorized experiments or
procedures must not be
attempted.
Keep solids out of the sink.
Keep hands away from face, eyes, mouth,
and body while using chemicals or lab
equipment.  Wash your hands with soap and
water after performing all experiments.
Do not leave your assigned
laboratory station without
permission of the teacher.
Do not lift any solutions,
glassware or other types of
apparatus above eye level.
Follow all instructions given
by your teacher.
Learn how to transport all
materials and equipment safely.
Labels and equipment instructions
must be read carefully before use. 
Set up and use the equipment as
directed by your teacher.
Check the label on all chemical
bottles twice before removing
any of the contents.  Take only
as much chemical as you need.
Do not operate a hot plate by yourself.  Take care
that hair, clothing, and hands are a safe distance
from the hot plate at all times.  Use of hot plate is
only allowed in the presence of the teacher.
No eating or drinking in the
lab at any time! 
Conduct yourself in a responsible
manner at all times in the
laboratory.
Leave your work station clean
and in good order before
leaving the laboratory.
