1. There is resistance to new scientific theories, scientists have
proven themselves many times however many ideas and
theories have either been ignored or rejected.
Evolution is 1 theory which had been Darwins theory of evolution
and had initially been rejected because of the time period it was
introduced in (1880’s).
Despite evolution being an established fact there is still
resistance due to religious beliefs and conservatives.
● Religion can be something which can hold resistance to a
person who is being told all this by a scientist like the
Evolution theory by Darwin.
Many people have their own opinions and the reason to
resistance to new scientific theories can be the fact that despite a
theory being proven with evidence and experiments, people do
not agree because of 1 person saying otherwise.
Why resistance to new theories often arise?
● There is no evidence to support the new
theories which have been suggested.
● There needs to be more tests and
experiments carried out before these new
scientific theories can be proved.
2. MMR vaccination-
● MMR scare was 1 theory which was disproven.
● Andrew Wakefield had been the source of the MMR vaccine scare and due to him many
parents refused to let their children get jabs/vaccinations
● which later lead to an increased number of child deaths due to measles.
● Their big problem is that he was no scientist and his ‘theory’ was disproved by many scientists
however many parents refused to listen to the scientists and would rather listen to 1 person
against a group of people who know what they are talking about.
● The pure fact that 1 person saying something can
cause deaths but yet parents and carers are still
believing his theory shows exactly why many
people now are trying to gather the proper evidence
and perform the most accurate tests possible in
order to get the public and people to believe them
For new theories which are trying to
be proven require much more
accurate predictions,experiments
etc.
3. I think that the resistance is given from the public not being able
to accept and believe the correct people like this case of the
MMR vaccinations. The fact that the process of trying to prove
Andrew Wakefield wrong or right took so long that a new
question arises whether we should trust scientists. The MMR
scare displays exactly that, that there are flaws and therefore are
the reason to resistance to new scientific theories.
