International Cooperative Programs
 During 2006-2015, NSFC witnessed dramatic increase of annual budget for
MoU-based international projects, and funded 5,200 international cooperative
projects with a total budget of 1.64 billion RMB.
 In 2015, the funding for international joint research projects accounts for
94.9% of the total budget for MoU-based cooperative programs.

INVESTMENT
 China’s economy relies on innovation.
 The central government pledges to increase funding for science and technology.
 In 2000, China spent about as much on R&D as France; now it invests more in this
area than the European Union (PPP). China’s total R&D spend grew from 245 billion
RMB in 2005 to 1422 billion RMB in 2015.

 As a result of China’s S&T system reform and as a means of
transforming the allocation of scientific research funds;
 Recommended by 89 fellows of Chinese Academy of
Sciences and authorized by the State Council of China;
 Established on February 14th, 1986, under the jurisdiction of
the State Council, as one of the major funding channels for
basic research in China.

Funding Outputs
During 2005-2015, Chinese scientists published
1.58 million international research articles, and
NSFC funded 62.1% of Chinese research papers,
or 11.5% of global academic output.
