Lesson 5 : Changes in
Matter in the Presence or
Absence of
Oxygenoduction
Group Activity
Make 4 groups
Each Group will be given a
topic to discuss and share it
to the whole class 5 minutes.
Group 1 - How does your
body feel when it’s time to eat
but there’s no food yet?
Group 2- Can we stop oxygen
from entering our body for
hours?
Group 3-How does your body
feel after eating your meal?
Group 4 - How does our body
use oxygen we breathe in?
Arrange the
jumbled word to
make it correct.

a chemical that is
found in the air, has

Breath in and Breath out Practice
“
What gas did
we breath in?
Why is it needed
by our body?
Do you have any
idea about the
changes it can do to
materials?
“Today, we will do
some investigation
on the changes that
happen in the
materials with the
presence of
oxygen.”
Activity 1
What Happens to Food Inside Our
Body?
Problem:
What happens in the
food inside our body in
the presence of
oxygen?
Materials:
Information about
oxygen and food Procedur
e:
1. Read the information
below.
2. Interpret the second
bullet through drawing a
picture.
Remember
Mercury Mars
Jupiter is a gas giant and
the biggest planet in the
Solar System
Neptune
Neptune is the fourth-
largest planet in the
Solar System
1. Oxygen is a part of the air that surrounds us. It is used by
the body to continue life. It also has effects on different
materials.
2. Digested food is metabolized or used up in the body by
combining with oxygen. This process releases energy from
the food so that the body can use it for biological processes
or for work.
3.People and animals use oxygen in respiration. As oxygen
is inhaled, some materials inside the body combine with it
and undergo a chemical reaction that gives off carbon
dioxide, water and energy.
4.This example given undergo the process of chemical
change.
Let’s have Group
Activity!
Activity 2
What Makes the Apple Turn Brown?
Problem:
What are the changes
that happen in materials
with presence of
oxygen?
Materials:
half of an apple Procedur
e:
1. Get the half of the
apple.
2. Observe its color.
3. Recall its color when
you have just cut it.
4. Fill out the table below.
Then, answer the
questions that follow.

Answer this!
What did you
Learn?
• Oxygen is a part of the
air that surrounds us. It is
used by the body to
continue life. It also has
effects on different
materials
• Digested food is
metabolized or used up in the
body by combining with
oxygen. This process
releases energy from the food
so that the body can use it for
biological processes or for
work.
• People and animals use
oxygen in respiration. As
oxygen is inhaled, some
materials inside the body
combine with it and undergo
a chemical reaction that gives
off carbon dioxide, water and
energy.
• Oxygen is a part of the air
that surrounds us. It has
effects on different materials.
• Some fruits like apple,
turnips, mango, etc. and some
root crops like sweet potato,
eggplant, etc. have enzymes
which when combined with
water gives it brown color, a
sign of food spoilage.
What should you do to the
fruits and vegetables after
peeling it? Why?
Let’s Have a Quiz!
● Saturn is composed of
hydrogen and helium
● Jupiter is the biggest
planet of them all
● Despite being red, Mars
is a cold place
● Mercury is the closest
planet to the Sun
Put a check ( ̷ )on the materials that
undergo changes with the presence of
oxygen.
___ 1. Making fire
___ 2. Breathing in
___ 3. Rusting of nails
___ 4. Browning of sliced
apple
___ 5. Fish kill
