Introduction and Overview of Apache Kafka, TriHUG July 23, 2013mumrah
Apache Kafka is a new breed of messaging system built for the "big data" world. Coming out of LinkedIn (and donated to Apache), it is a distributed pub/sub system built in Scala. It has been an Apache TLP now for several months with the first Apache release imminent. Built for speed, scalability, and robustness, Kafka should definitely be one of the data tools you consider when designing distributed data-oriented applications.
The talk will cover a general overview of the project and technology, with some use cases, and a demo.

Description
Apache Druid is a cloud-native open-source database that enables developers to build highly-scalable, low-latency, real-time interactive dashboards and apps to explore huge quantities of data. This column-oriented database provides the microsecond query response times required for ad-hoc queries and programmatic analytics. Druid natively streams data from Apache Kafka (and more) and batch loads just about anything. At ingestion, Druid partitions data based on time so time-based queries run significantly faster than traditional databases, plus Druid offers SQL compatibility. Druid is used in production by AirBnB, Nielsen, Netflix and more for real-time and historical data analytics. This talk provides an introduction to Apache Druid including: Druid's core architecture and its advantages, Working with streaming and batch data in Druid, Querying data and building apps on Druid and Real-world examples of Apache Druid in action

Power of the Log: LSM & Append Only Data Structuresconfluent
This talk is about the beauty of sequential access and append-only data structures. We'll do this in the context of a little-known paper entitled “Log Structured Merge Trees”. LSM describes a surprisingly counterintuitive approach to storing and accessing data in a sequential fashion. It came to prominence in Google's Big Table paper and today, the use of Logs, LSM and append-only data structures drive many of the world's most influential storage systems: Cassandra, HBase, RocksDB, Kafka and more. Finally, we'll look at how the beauty of sequential access goes beyond database internals, right through to how applications communicate, share data and scale.
Apache Kafka becoming the message bus to transfer huge volumes of data from various sources into Hadoop.
It's also enabling many real-time system frameworks and use cases.
Managing and building clients around Apache Kafka can be challenging. In this talk, we will go through the best practices in deploying Apache Kafka
in production. How to Secure a Kafka Cluster, How to pick topic-partitions and upgrading to newer versions. Migrating to new Kafka Producer and Consumer API.
Also talk about the best practices involved in running a producer/consumer.
In Kafka 0.9 release, we’ve added SSL wire encryption, SASL/Kerberos for user authentication, and pluggable authorization. Now Kafka allows authentication of users, access control on who can read and write to a Kafka topic. Apache Ranger also uses pluggable authorization mechanism to centralize security for Kafka and other Hadoop ecosystem projects.
We will showcase open sourced Kafka REST API and an Admin UI that will help users in creating topics, re-assign partitions, Issuing
Kafka ACLs and monitoring Consumer offsets.

MongoDB: How We Did It – Reanimating Identity at AOLMongoDB
AOL experienced explosive growth and needed a new database that was both flexible and easy to deploy with little effort. They chose MongoDB. Due to the complexity of internal systems and the data, most of the migration process was spent building a new identity platform and adapters for legacy apps to talk to MongoDB. Systems were migrated in 4 phases to ensure that users were not impacted during the switch. Turning on dual reads/writes to both legacy databases and MongoDB also helped get production traffic into MongoDB during the process. Ultimately, the project was successful with the help of MongoDB support. Today, the team has 15 shards, with 60-70 GB per shard.

Scylla Summit 2018: Consensus in Eventually Consistent DatabasesScyllaDB
Eventually consistent databases choose to remain available under failure, allowing for conflicting data to be stored in different replicas (later repaired by background processes). Weakening the consistency guarantees improves not only availability, but also performance, as the number of replicas involved in a given operation can be minimized. There are, however, use-cases that require the opposite trade-off. Indeed, Apache Cassandra and Scylla provide Lightweight Transactions (LWT), which allow single-key linearizable updates. The mechanism underlying LWT is asynchronous consensus. In this talk, we'll describe the characteristics and requirements of Scylla's consensus implementation, and how it enables strongly consistent updates. We will also cover how consensus can be applied to other aspects of the system, such as schema changes, node membership, and range movements, in order to improve their reliability and safety. We will thus show that an eventually consistent database can leverage consensus without compromising either availability or performance.

"PHP projects beyond the LAMP stack" by Thijs Feryn
For people in open source, LAMP is a very common acronym. But as your site or application gets more popular, you'll notice that your stack needs more than just Apache, MySQL and just PHP: there are more pieces to the puzzle. This talk will feature a bunch of "new" components that are used by modern day applications at scale. Components like: Nginx, Varnish, ElasticSearch, Redis, RabbitMQ, NodeJS, Go, HHVM and many more. The end goal is to assemble a proof of concept that is fast, scalable, highly available and modular. We'll still use PHP, but only where it makes sense.

NATS - A new nervous system for distributed cloud platformsDerek Collison
NATS is an open-source, high-performance, lightweight cloud messaging system.
NATS was created by Derek Collison, Founder/CEO of Apcera who has spent 20+ years designing, building, and using publish-subscribe messaging systems. Unlike traditional enterprise messaging systems, NATS has an always-on dial tone that does whatever it takes to remain available. This forms a great base for building modern, reliable, and scalable cloud and distributed systems.
In 2012, Derek Collison (Founder and CEO, Apcera) predicted that “Go will become the dominant language for systems work in IaaS Orchestration, and PaaS in 24 months.” Today, he feels his prediction wasn't too far off.
In this 20 minute lightning talk from Gopher Summerfest, Derek talks about why his team chose Go and how they’ve implemented it.

What's beyond Virtualization - The Future of Cloud PlatformsDerek Collison
My updated talk om the future of IT at QCon NY
What lies beyond virtualization? How do we start the journey to a secure, composeable, and trusted hybrid platform that truly delivers the business value and velocity we all want?
In the era of software-defined everything, one goal is to reach a fluid infrastructure that has the level of plasticity needed to self heal itself and provide higher level SLAs for applications and services. Adding value to existing applications and services in a transparent fashion requires a rethinking of core technologies in the platform space. In this talk we will take a look at some low level technologies and approaches to achieving this goal. Topics will range from Intelligent layer 7 SDN with semantic awareness, distributed scheduling algorithms, policy distribution and invalidation, health monitoring and management, self healing techniques, and the role of unsupervised deep machine learning and anomaly detection.
Distributed Design and Architecture of Cloud FoundryDerek Collison
In this session we will dig deep into Cloud Foundry's core architecture and design principles. We will discuss the challenges around scaling and operating a large scale service as we combined the PaaS and traditional IaaS layers, and how we achieve multiple updates per week to the system with no perceived downtime. Allowing user to download a single virtual machine that is a complete replica of the service presented some challenges as well, and we will discuss our approach to offering up the downloadable private cloud.

As a film director, I have always been awestruck by the magic of animation. Animation, a medium once considered solely for the amusement of children, has undergone a significant transformation over the years. Its evolution from a rudimentary form of entertainment to a sophisticated form of storytelling has stirred my creativity and expanded my vision, offering limitless possibilities in the realm of cinematic storytelling.
In the vast landscape of cinema, stories have been told, retold, and reimagined in countless ways. At the heart of this narrative evolution lies the concept of a "remake". A successful remake allows us to revisit cherished tales through a fresh lens, often reflecting a different era's perspective or harnessing the power of advanced technology. Yet, the question remains, what makes a remake successful? Today, we will delve deeper into this subject, identifying the key ingredients that contribute to the success of a remake.

4. Background
• Scalable Apps maintain performance under load
• More requests, More users, More data
• Available Apps maintain the experience during failures
• Hardware failures, Network splits/partitioning
• Simple Designs tend to scale better

Tradeoffs
• Measure everything (can’t fix what you don’t know)

• Understand your user experience
• Don’t be a failure of your own success
23. Know what to scale!
• CPU or IO Bound?
• Scale up or Scale out?
• Waiting on IO? What? Disk/Net/Other System?
• How many components are used per request?
• Know who and what the slowest will be!
35. Asynchronous and
Non-Blocking
✓Don’t wait, go doing something else
✓Never block
✓All callbacks all the time can get messy!
✓Good language/framework support
✓functional closures
✓co-routines
36. Load Balancing
✓Multiple endpoints to perform work
✓Can be semantically aware
✓Chainable: DNS, hardware, software
✓Endpoints can be Hardware, VM,
process, thread, co-routine, fiber, etc.
48. Master Record: Scaling
✓Traditonally Scale Up
✓Technology will help here
✓SSD (50k-100k IOPs)
✓More memory/cores per box
✓Faster network connectivity
✓Clustering Appliances
66. NoSQL in the wild
✓Google: Bigtable, Colossus
✓Twitter: Redis
✓Amazon: Dynamo, SimpleDB
✓Yahoo: HBase (Hadoop)
✓Facebook: Cassandra, HBase
67. Caching
✓Cache early and often
✓Usually biggest bang for the buck
✓Referential Transparency
✓Polyglot APIs coming
✓NoSQL stores
✓Cache invalidation is still hard!
72. HTTP Caching
✓Lives in browsers, proxies, CDNs, apps
✓Hard to control, so do it right!
✓Master page controls other resources
✓master page not cached (at least too far)
✓read-only resources
✓change link in master page
78. Cache Invalidation
✓TTL (Time to Live)
✓Bounded FIFO or LIFO
✓Explicit cache invalidation
✓Explicit non-use of read-only resource
✓Harder problem the more master items used
79. Scalability Key Points
✓The problem is not where you think ;)
✓Autoscaling is a myth
✓Can’t fix what you can’t measure
✓Scaling master record writes is hard
✓Scaling reads is more tractable
✓What is the opex cost of your choices?
101. Eventually Consistent
✓Great tradeoff for the right kind of data
✓Can’t be used everywhere
✓Works in more places than you think
✓Solved speed of light problem
108. Availability Key Points
✓Always have a dial tone
✓Syntactically correct is good
✓Semantically correct is better
✓Be transparent
