Charlemagne was named emperor of Rome by Pope Leo III in 800 AD, marking the first time in 300 years that there was an emperor for both the eastern and western parts of the Roman Empire. This established a new Holy Roman Empire based in Western Europe with Charlemagne as its first emperor.
