 Vertical drying ranges or VDRs can be found in every textile processing unit. All continuous textile
processing machines are equipped with VDRs. Standalone VDRs are common even in batch
processing units.
 VDRs have multiple drying cylinders, which are designed to dry wet fabric down to the required
moisture level in the fabric
 Manufacturers of continuous process lines calculate the number of drying cylinders required based on
the highest speed and the heaviest fabric
 In most cases there is no scope for controlling the drying process, which means that while heavy
products are dried adequately, lighter products are over dried
 Continuous high demand for steam, even when not needed, leads to excessive energy consumption

Depending on the total number of cylinders of VDR, the dryers are split into 4 groups

Entrance group

Cooling area

For each group the temperature is registered by a PT 1000 temperature sensor
The cylinder temperature is measured indirectly through the condensate temperature

Humidity measurement is by a residual moisture sensor (RMS)
The relative humidity of the fabric is measured by an RMS installed at the exit group of
the drying cylinders

Controlling the steam using steam valves
The inlet of the steam in the cylinder is
through proportionate valves, which enables
effective heat transfer control

 The first control loop is used to measure
and control the condensate temperatures
of the drum dryers combined in groups
 The deviation of the condensate
temperature from a preset point is used
to directly calculate the amount of energy
required for drying
 The steam supply is adjusted to the
moisture of the incoming product
 The second control loop uses a RMS to
capture the residual moisture of the
product after leaving the dryer
 The intelligent controller algorithms used
take all input variables into account and
provide rapid yet stable control of the
residual moisture

Atmoset SMT-15 – advantages
Production of high quality fabric
 Prevents over drying; improves the dyeing
solidity, evenness, and overall appearance of
the dyed fabric as uniform moisture is
maintained across the width of the fabric
 Always achieves the optimal degree of drying,
regardless of the weight of the product or the
web speed
 The fabric feel is very good as the fabric
structure does not become flat
 The dyeing machine cooling requirement
relatively decreases since even moisture is
maintained across the width of the fabric
 Enables a stable and effective drying process

  • 2. 2  Vertical drying ranges or VDRs can be found in every textile processing unit. All continuous textile processing machines are equipped with VDRs. Standalone VDRs are common even in batch processing units.  VDRs have multiple drying cylinders, which are designed to dry wet fabric down to the required moisture level in the fabric  Manufacturers of continuous process lines calculate the number of drying cylinders required based on the highest speed and the heaviest fabric  In most cases there is no scope for controlling the drying process, which means that while heavy products are dried adequately, lighter products are over dried  Continuous high demand for steam, even when not needed, leads to excessive energy consumption Vertical drying ranges (VDRs) – challenges

  • 6. 6 Humidity measurement is by a residual moisture sensor (RMS) The relative humidity of the fabric is measured by an RMS installed at the exit group of the drying cylinders Atmoset SMT-15 – working principle
  • 7. 7 Controlling the steam using steam valves The inlet of the steam in the cylinder is through proportionate valves, which enables effective heat transfer control Atmoset SMT-15 – working principle
  • 8. 8  The first control loop is used to measure and control the condensate temperatures of the drum dryers combined in groups  The deviation of the condensate temperature from a preset point is used to directly calculate the amount of energy required for drying  The steam supply is adjusted to the moisture of the incoming product  The second control loop uses a RMS to capture the residual moisture of the product after leaving the dryer  The intelligent controller algorithms used take all input variables into account and provide rapid yet stable control of the residual moisture Atmoset SMT-15 – working principle
  • 9. 9 Atmoset SMT-15 – advantages Production of high quality fabric  Prevents over drying; improves the dyeing solidity, evenness, and overall appearance of the dyed fabric as uniform moisture is maintained across the width of the fabric  Always achieves the optimal degree of drying, regardless of the weight of the product or the web speed  The fabric feel is very good as the fabric structure does not become flat  The dyeing machine cooling requirement relatively decreases since even moisture is maintained across the width of the fabric  Enables a stable and effective drying process
