India ranks poorly (66th out of 71 countries) on maternal health according to a World Health Report. Over half of births in India are unattended by medical professionals. The maternal mortality rate in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh is 500 deaths per 100,000 live births, higher than the national average of 310. Local NGO Save A Mother India aims to address this issue through community health worker training programs to promote prenatal care, institutional delivery, and postnatal care.
