2. WHAT IS WATER
MANAGEMENT?
WATER MANAGEMENT IS THE ACTIVITY OF PLANNING, DEVELOPING,
DISTRIBUTING AND MANAGING THE OPTIMUM USE OF WATER RESOURCES
UNDER DEFINED WATER POLICES AND REGULATIONS. IT INCLUDES:
MANAGEMENT OF WATER TREATMENT OF DRINKING WATER, INDUSTRIAL
WATER, SEWAGE WATER ETC.
3.
4. SOURCES OF
WATER :-
THERE ARE VARIOUS SOURCES OF WATER. ABOUT 97% OF THE WATER ON THE EARTH’S
SURFACE IS COVERED WITH WATER. THE THREE MAIN SOURCES OF WATER ARE:
I) RAINWATER
II) GROUNDWATER
III) SURFACE WATER – THIS INCLUDES DIFFERENT WATER BODIES LIKE SEA, OCEANS,
RESERVOIRS, RIVERS, STREAMS, PONDS, LAKES AND TANKS.
IMPORTANCE OF WATER:-
WE ALL NEED WATER FOR DIFFERENT DAILY ACTIVITIES INCLUDING:
DOMESTIC PURPOSES: INCLUDE BATHING, CLEANING, COOKING, DRINKING, AND
WASHING.
AGRICULTURAL APPLICATIONS: INCLUDE IRRIGATION, FARMING, GARDENING, AND FROST
CONTROL.
5.
6. CAUSES OF WATER MANAGEMENT
1) CLIMATE CHANGE :-
2) More People + More Money = More Water Demand:-
It's a simple equation: As populations increase and incomes grow, so does
water demand. The world's population, now at 7.5 billion, is projected to add
2.3 billion more people by 2050.
7. 3) GROUNDWATER IS BEING DEPLETED:-
ABOUT 30 PERCENT OF EARTH'S FRESH WATER LIES DEEP UNDERGROUND
IN AQUIFERS. AND IT'S EXTRACTED DAILY FOR FARMING, DRINKING AND
INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES – OFTEN AT DANGEROUSLY UNSUSTAINABLE RATES.
4) NATURAL CALAMITIES SUCH DROUGHTS AND
FLOOD:-

12. STEPS TAKEN BY INDIAN GOVERNMENT TO CONSERVE WATER
The 'Jal Shakti Abhiyan' will focus on five aspects -
• Water conservation and rainwater harvesting
• Renovation of traditional and other water bodies
• Reuse of water and recharging of structures
• Watershed development
• Intensive afforestation
Steps Taken for Water Conservation
Since 2011, programme of digging ponds is being undertaken throughout state for conservation of water.
About 3 lakhs ponds have been dug till now to deal with water scarcity.
State has water conservation programme: Jal dharo Jal bharo (Collect water, store water). To prevent floods
and provide water during the period of scarcity, many check dams have been constructed and irrigation
canals have been rejuvenated.

14. GREY WATER
What is grey water ?
Grey water (also spelled grey water, grey water, gray water) or sullage is all wastewater generated in
households or office buildings from streams without fecal contamination. By definition grey water
is generally waste water from showers, baths, basins, and washing machines.
15. Proposal for water management
We saw one of the grey water source is washing machine or when we wash our clothes.
We can put laundry store in every 200m radius of a community
The laundry store will be capable of cleaning lot of grey water and reuse it for washing clothes
again which might not have been viable for a single household.
Government could open laundry shop and encourage public to use it. As a part of there water
conservation program.
