The San Diego Alligator Lizard is a carnivorous reptile found along the coasts of California and Baja California. It has a slender, snake-like body with a long tail and comes in various colors like brown, gray, red and yellow. When threatened, it will open its mouth wide to display teeth and may drop its tail. The alligator lizard lives in grasslands, woodlands and forests near water and prefers cooler temperatures. It feeds on insects and other small invertebrates. Females lay 5-20 eggs between May and July that hatch around 11 weeks later.
