The wolverine is a medium-sized carnivorous mammal classified in the order Carnivora and family Mustelidae. There are two main species - the North American wolverine and the European wolverine. Wolverines inhabit tundra and mountainous areas across the northern latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. They are solitary animals that mate between May and August and females give birth to litters of around 3 cubs after a 120-272 day gestation period. Wolverines play an important role in their ecosystem as both predators and scavengers.
