Ginkgo is a dioecious tree with fan-shaped leaves that are light green above and below. Female trees produce small green catkins in the spring that develop into 1-2 inch "cones" containing a single seed with a fleshy outer covering that smells unpleasant when ripe in the fall. The inner seed of ginkgo is edible after the first frost. Ginkgo trees have light reddish-brown twigs that become gray with prominent spur shoots and broadly shaped buds.
