Salmons eat other aquatic animals and have a lifespan of about 12 years. There are 7 species of salmon. After spending 1 to 5 years in the open ocean, they return to freshwater streams to spawn. Salmon benefit their predators by undergoing physical changes that allow them to live in saltwater, making them accessible as a food source to predators. Female salmon spawn between 3,000 to 15,000 eggs per run to increase the chances of egg survival due to ocean predators.
