Maintainable Machine Learning Products
Machine learning applications are typically stitched together from hopes and dreams, shell scripts, cron jobs, home-grown schedulers, snippets of configuration clipped from multiple blog posts, thousands of hard-coded business rules, a.k.a. "our SQL corpus," and a few lines of training and testing code. Organizing all the moving parts into something maintainable and supportive of ongoing development is a challenge most teams have on their TODO list, roadmap, or tech debt pile. Getting ahead of the day-to-day demands and settling into a sane architecture often seems like an unattainable goal. The past several years have seen an explosion of tool-building in the data engineering and analytics area, including in Apache projects spanning the areas of search and information retrieval, job orchestration, file and stream formats, and machine learning libraries. In this talk we will cover our product and development teams' choices of architecture and tools, from data ingestion and storage, through transformations and processing, to presentation of results and publishing to web services, reports, and applications.

An Agile Approach to Machine Learning
Machine learning has become an important tool in the modern software toolbox, and high-performing organizations are increasingly coming to rely on data science and machine learning as a core part of their business. eBay introduced machine learning to its commerce search ranking and drove double-digit increases in revenue. Stitch Fix built a multibillion dollar clothing retail business in the US by combining the best of machines with the best of humans. And WeWork is bringing machine-learned approaches to the physical office environment all around the world. In all cases, algorithmic techniques started simple and slowly became more sophisticated over time. This talk will use these examples to derive an agile approach to machine learning, and will explore that approach across several different dimensions. We will set the stage by outlining the kinds of problems that are most amenable to machine-learned approaches as well as describing some important prerequisites, including investments in data quality, a robust data pipeline, and experimental discipline. Next, we will choose the right (algorithmic) tool for the right job, and suggest how to incrementally evolve the algorithmic approaches we bring to bear. Most fancy cutting-edge recommender systems in the real world, for example, started out with simple rules-based techniques or basic regression. Finally, we will integrate machine learning into the broader product development process, and see how it can help us to accelerate business results
Distributed Time Travel for Feature Generation at Netflix
Learning is an analytic process of exploring the past in order to predict the future. Hence, being able to travel back in time to create feature is critical for machine learning projects to be successful. At Netflix, we spend significant time and effort experimenting with new features and new ways of building models. This involves generating features for our members from different regions over multiple days. To enable this, we built a time machine using Apache Spark that computes features for any arbitrary time in the recent past. The first step of building this time machine is to snapshot the data from various micro services on a regular basis. We built a general purpose workflow orchestration and scheduling framework optimized for machine learning pipelines and used it to run the snapshot and model training workflows. Snapshot data is then consumed by feature encoders to compute various features for offline experimentation and model training. Crucially, the same feature encoders are used in both offline model building and online scoring for production or A/B tests. Building this time machine helped us try new ideas quickly without placing stress on production services and without having to wait for data accumulation of the newly-implemented features. Moreover, building it with Apache Spark empowered us to both scale up the data size by an order of magnitude and train and validate the models in less time. Finally, using Apache Zeppelin notebook, we are able to interactively prototype features and run experiments.

DB Tsai is an Apache Spark committer and a Senior Research Engineer working on Personalized Recommendation Algorithms at Netflix. Prior to joining Netflix, DB was a Lead Machine Learning Engineer at Alpine Data Labs, where He implemented several algorithms including Linear Regression and Binary/Multinomial Logistic Regression with Elastici-Net (L1/L2) regularization using LBFGS/OWL-QN optimizers in Apache Spark. DB was a Ph.D. candidate in Applied Physics at Stanford University. He holds a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.

On 2020-12-09 Laurens Vijnck and Jonny Daenen gave a workshop at PXL.
During this session, we collectively provisioned a streaming ingestion pipeline in mere minutes. The technology stack included Pub/Sub, Dataflow, and BigQuery. Hereafter, students had the opportunity to perform interactive queries on their own real-time data to answer a series of business questions. These questions were borrowed from real-life cases that we encountered at Selligent Marketing Cloud.
Google Colab (Free Jupyter Notebooks) and Google Data Studio have proven to be excellent tools to facilitate these kinds of interactive sessions.

Abstract:
In the last decades many systems have been used that were described as "queues" (AQ, ActiveMQ, RabbitMQ, etc.), yet from a computer science perspective these are not queues at all. Many of us have learned to work quite effectively with these messaging systems and we all understand that we cannot expect to receive the messages in any particular order and that we get all messages exactly once (which we can expect with a queue). With the arrival of Kafka and Flink a new class of applications became possible. In this talk I will go into several real applications from the bol.com context that all revolve around low latency behavioral analytics. I will talk about the entire end-to-end pipeline from the webbrowser and application server to application and discuss many of the things to think about when creating your analysis application. I will also touch upon using state machines as a way of doing this type of behavioral analysis using very simple software and show example algorithms from our context.

Abstract:
In the last decades many systems have been used that were described as "queues" (AQ, ActiveMQ, RabbitMQ, etc.), yet from a computer science perspective these are not queues at all. Many of us have learned to work quite effectively with these messaging systems and we all understand that we cannot expect to receive the messages in any particular order and that we get all messages exactly once (which we can expect with a queue). With the arrival of Kafka and Flink a new class of applications became possible. In this talk I will go into several real applications from the bol.com context that all revolve around low latency behavioral analytics. I will talk about the entire end-to-end pipeline from the webbrowser and application server to application and discuss many of the things to think about when creating your analysis application. I will also touch upon using state machines as a way of doing this type of behavioral analysis using very simple software and show example algorithms from our context.

Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
