2. What is Wool?
Wool is a kind of
animal fibre. Which is
obtained from the body
coat of some animals that
have fine, soft hair close to
their skin. This body coat
of fine soft hair is called
Fleece.

3. 1. Shearing
Shearing is the process by which the
fleece of sheep, along with a very thin layer of
dead skin is removed from the body. The annual
shearing most often occurs in a shearing shed, a
facility especially designed to process often
hundreds and sometimes more than 3000
sheeps per day.
Sheeps are shorn in all seasons,
depending on the climate, management
requirements and the availability of a
woolclasser and shearers. Sheep shearing is also
considered a sport with competitions held
around the world. It is often done between
spring and summers.

4. 2. Scouring
After the fleece is shorn, the first
step in the manufacturing process is
scouring the wool. This uses hot water
and detergents to remove the grease,
sweat, dirt and most of the vegetable
matter, leaving only the clean wool.
Wool scouring typically uses water and
alkali.
Although scouring with an organic
solvent is also possible suitable
machines are also used for this purpose.
This process is called scouring.

5. 3. Sorting
The process of separating hair of
different textures from the fleece is called
sorting. The sorted fibres are scoured again
and then dried. The fleece is sorted into grades
by individuals who have developed a keen
sense of touch. They sort the fibres according
to fineness, length, and colour. Each wool
product is made from a different type of fiber
and the sorter divides the fleece accordingly.
Sorting is a hazardous Job because the
person involved may get infected by a
bacterium called anthrax, which can cause a
fatal disease called sorters disease.

6. 4. Dyeing
The natural hair of sheep is white,
brown or black. The raw fibres are,
therefore, dyed in different colours. If the
dyeing occurs after the wool is washed,
then it is referred to as stock dyed wool. If
the wool is dyed after it is span into yarn,
then it is referred to as yarn dyed. Many
subtle dye colours can be extracted from
various plants for a natural dye process.

7. 5. Spinning
The raw and dyed fibres
are then twisted together to
make threads called yarn. The
yarn threads may be long or
short in size. The longer threads
are usually knitted to make
Sweaters, Mufflers, Caps, gloves,
Socks etc, The sorter threads are
woven to make woolen fabrics
which are used for making coats,
trousers, Jackets and shawls.
