Homily for the Funeral for the Hon. Paul A. Kapalko James Knipper
Yesterday I had the privilege of preaching at the funeral mass of a man I have known for 31 years, the Hon. Paul A. Kapalko.
Paul stayed in NJ throughout his life, earning his BA from Rutgers in '76 and his JD from Seton Hall School of Law in '79. After graduation he became a proud member of the Bar Assoc., joining the law firms of Lawson & Kapalko and Lawrence & Kapalko.
He entered local politics as an Asbury Park City Councilman in '85, serving until he was appointed to the NJ State Assembly in '89. He also served as the Manasquan Municipal Prosecutor; the Planning Board attorney for Neptune, Bradley Beach and Keyport; and the Commissioner of the Monmouth Co. Improvement Authority.
In '90 he became father to his eldest daughter, my niece, Casey, and in that same year ran for Congress. He lost the race, but two years later was appointed a Judge of the NJ Division of Worker's Compensation. He welcomed his second daughter, Christina, in '94, the same year he was promoted to Director and Chief Judge of Workers' Compensation.
In '02 he was appointed by Gov. Donald DeFrancesco to the Family Division of the Superior Court of Monmouth County. He became the Presiding Judge in '04 and then transferred to the Civil Division in '07. He worked with a clear sense of justice and understanding, and was known for his ability to settle cases before ever needing to go to trial. Admired by his peers throughout his life, he dutifully served as a Superior Court Judge for 16 years.
He was a loving father, brother, and uncle. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Edward and Rose Kapalko of Asbury Park. He is survived by his daughter Casey and her wife Stephanie Vazquez, his daughter Christina, and their mother Mary Jo (nee Knipper) McKinley all of West Long Branch. Paul is also survived by his brother Gregory and his wife Cindy, as well as their children Jamie (Jeremy Glapion) and Eddie, all of Belmar. He will be missed dearly by not only his family, but also by all whose lives he touched. He will always be remembered as a fighter and as an inspiration to all.
This is not my creation, I loved it & wanted to share with my friends here.

Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

2. A Happy Heart
– Here is the face of Sam.
– Do you think his heart is happy?
– God hope that our hearts and faces are like that very often.
– But the heart can get cold, too, can’t in? It can be crabby.
– God hope your heart is not cold very often,
– But the heart can get warm! What else can a heart be?
3. A Angry Heart
A. This is Steve. What do you think his heart
is like?
– He is Sad.
B. Look at peter. He is yelling at David.
– His heart is angry!
4. God’s Heart & Our Hearts
– I am delighted that we are speaking about the
heart today.
– Your heart, your friend’s heart, and also the Heart
of God.
– Now , let us look at these faces again.
– What is happening with Sam and Judy?
– They are playing, having fun,
– and that make happy friends and happy face.
5. A Cold Attitude, A Cold Heart
– But, look Mr. Crabby!
– I hope that none of you are Mr. Crabby, or Miss Crabby!
– What is going on with Stan and his friend, Phil?
– What is Stan saying?
– “Hey, what did you do with my ball? Where is it?!?”
– Oh! Phil is not going to play today with Sam!
– Mr. Crabby!
6. Attitudes of the Heart
– Steve looks sad, doesn’t he?
– What is he sad about? Steve is sad because his little sister is very
sick.
– He loves his little sister a lot.
– He is very sad for her.
– Look at David he is yelling at Peter! I hope you don’t yell a lot
and you don’t have friends who yell at you.
– What is he saying?
– “What is you want to do when you gave all the right answers in class;
you made me look stupid!”
– He is yelling, and he is judging his friend.
7. We Are Affected In Our Hearts
– What is happening with these faces and
events?
– We are affected by what our friends are doing to us.
– We are being affected in our hearts.
– Look at this :
A. sometimes our friends treat us very well.
B. Other times, our friends treat us poorly, even when
they don’t do it on purpose! They just don’t treat us
well.
8. A Friend With So Much Love In His Heart
– Today we are going to talk about a friend, who only treats us one way,
because that is the only way he knows how to treat us.
– How does he treat us?
– With LOVE, because all He has in his heart is Love.
– This friend has so much love in his heart.. That is is just burning with
love!
– Look at his Heart:
– it has a flame of love… and it is just full of life,
– all alive! And full of love!
– It is a Heart that loves so much! S
– And this flame: it cannot be put out.
– Nothing can put it out! You know this Friend is: JESUS!
9. Jairo's Daughter
– Jesus came. He walked in, and He saw all the people there!
– They are crowding around.
– They are crying.
– They feel very bad.
– Jesus walks in, and he senses all that.
– He sees that they are sad because this child is dead.
– Jesus say to them, “NO, no! She is not dead. She is just asleep!”
– Well, you would think that they would be all happy, excited and thankful to
Jesus? No!
– Do you know what they did instead?
– They laughed at Jesus!
10. Jesus Heart is Full of Love
– And what did Jesus do?
– Did he say, “Oh, I am leaving! You didn’t treat me nicely? No!
– He didn’t judge.
– His heart was so full of love for this little girl that he walked
straight through the crowd to the bedroom, where the parents
were with the little girl.
– He said, “little girl, get up.”
– And that little girl sat up, she was alive!
11. His Love for Us
Cost Him His Life
– You would think that everyone would be very pleased about what
Jesus did because he was so helpful and good to everyone.
– But we see some the thorns on the heart because it is just not easy to
love.
– In fact, we know this from Jesus and his life, because his love for us cost him
his life.
– You now this, don’t you?
– You know about the Cross!
12. Sacred Heart of Jesus
– It is very interesting and it is wonderful to know about Jesus:
– we can cause him to suffer.
– But do you know that we cannot make him hate.
– His Heart simply cannot hate.
– He cannot even hate those who make him suffer.
– That is because he is so good.
– He is as full of goodness as God the Father is.
– We call this kind of goodness “SACRED”
– this heart is Sacred Heart of Jesus.
13. SACRED HEART OF JESUS
– There is something very interesting and unusual about the Sacred Heard
of Jesus.
– I want you to look very closely, because not everyone notices this about the
Heart of Jesus. It is an OPENING AND A WOUND.
– That is for you and for me to step into God’s Heart, to the Heart of Jesus.
– THE WOUND OR OPENING ON THE HEART means the heart of Jesus is
always open to you and me to come in.
– THE BURNING FLAME ON THE TOP OF THE HEART It has a flame that never
extinguished: THE TRANFORMATIVE POWER OF DIVINE LOVE. God love for
us will never extinguished and is available for us all the time.
– When we get close to God we are transformed by the power of his divine
love.
14. – THE CROSS Means that Jesus offer his life, so we may have a chance to be forever in
heaven.
– THE CROWN OF TORNS The Sacred Heart is typically surrounded by a crown or a
circle of thorns to represent the pain and wounds suffered by Jesus for the sins
committed by men.
– represents the crown of torn in Jesus head, and all what he has suffered for us, and that He
bear so much pain.
– Also it reminds us that we some times are irritated and suffer too, but we may bear those
irritations and suffering with patient and love.
– THE SHIELD OF LIGHT surrounding the heart, is the Love of God
– Also it means that anything that happens or hurts us, first will pass through Jesus’s heart
before it hurts us.
– There is not pain that we suffered that Jesus has not feel it first.
– Every time we are harm and suffer, Jesus is suffering too because his love for us is infinite.
SACRED HEART OF JESUS
15. A Heart Like Jesus
– If you choose to let Jesus love you, and if you love Jesus back…
– Do you know what your heart will be like?
– Very, very happy! Your life, too!
– We can each place our hearts around the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
– Jesus loves us… and that’s what he said,
– “Come to me! Come in and bring your sadness and your joys, bring
your happiness. Bring yourself to me so I may comfort you
16. MANUALITIES
Lets make Some Hearts
– Write on the back of your heart the name of a person that you would
like to treat with special care; someone whose love you will appreciate
in a special way.
– For example
a) Your mother’s name— because you want to give her a happy face instead
of a sad face;
b) Your father’s name— to thank him for loving you
c) Your friend’s name— because you want to forgive him with all you heart.
17. LOVE AS JESUS LOVES
– Jesus is in the Center and all our hearts around him. It will remind us
that we can love as Jesus loves.
– Look what happens to the world around us:
– we can fill it with happy hearts,
– joyful hearts, forgiving hearts, patient hearts and happy faces.
– I hope that today we learned about our own hearts,
– about the hearts of your parents,
– the hearts of your friends
– and specially about the Heart of our Best Friend, JESUS.
