Good afternoon and welcome. The future of maintenance is just
beyond the frontier. You can see some of it far off on the horizon.
Some of it, is here today and you may not know it.
Slide 2
This is a Study Group Session for S7, Trailers, Bodies, and Material
Handling
Slide 3
I’m pretty sure everyone here as a mobile phone. Please make sure it
is in silent mode. If you need to answer it, please get up and take the
call outside.

Slide 7 Introduce Session
Today, we are going to talk about “Smart Trailers and Creating
Trucking’s Next Information Superhighway”

Smart trailer technology is redefining the capability of trailers. More
than just a box in which goods are hauled, smart trailers are mobile
treasure troves of data; containing information on many different
aspects of the freight logistics process. Thanks to sensor technology,
fleets have new visibility on
load monitoring and condition, delivery status, vehicle health,
maintenance status, and location, reducing the need for breakdown
maintenance and roadside repairs as well as improving CSA
compliance and boosting driver productivity and retention. Smart
trailers integrate sensors and data collection onboard the trailer from a
variety of manufacturers and suppliers, providing the collective
information into useful consolidated reporting for the fleet. Some of the
data points include exterior and interior temperature, door open status,
tire pressure monitoring, ABS events, wheel hub vibration and hub
temperature, tire temperature, cargo monitoring, light-out monitoring,
and more.
Slide 8
We asked our panelists to address specific areas.
From the fleet representative
Do smart trailers enhance maintenance?
Do they impace cost-per-mile?
What impact do they have on road breakdowns?
For the trailer OE
What are some of the potential issues?
Are there benefits for the trailer OE?
Will it help with warranty data, as it has on tractors and trucks?
From the knowledgeable smart trailer expert
How did we get here?
Exactly how does a system like this work?
What standards are there?

For the diagnostic supplier
What can we learn from past efforts in diagnostics on engines and
tractors?
What challenges are there for interfacing to the back office fleet
management system?
How should software updates be handled?

customers with advanced technology such as the corrosion-defeating
Defender lighting and harness system and the new PetersonPULSE
intelligent trailer system. Thanks, Al

As we begin, I’d like to remind us all that we are in the business of
moving product from point A to point B. Many of us are involved in
doing it with trailers that are pulled by tractors. Some of us are using
straight trucks. Others use rail, ships, and planes.
Slide 16
In the future, the freight may be hauled part of the way by automated
vehicles such as these. My point is, the frontier is not thinking in terms
of trailers as we’ve always known them. Think more broadly to
consider anything that can haul freight.
