UTA has seen increasing bike share ridership from 2013 to 2015 while paratransit calls have decreased over the same period. UTA has made several transit improvements such as upgrading bus stops, making stops ADA compliant, adding bike lockers and amenities at stations, and providing new accommodations for cyclists.

- $250,000 Let’s just think about what you would do with $250,000 to enhance your system. Seems like a lot of money at first, but it quickly disappears. What would I do if my Board gave me a quarter million dollars? How can I make it go further?
- Well, I could buy a few things like a, The front half a bus, Maybe one canopy of a Light Rail Station, A couple lights and poles for a grade crossing, A stainless steel tuff shed full of electronics, Not much…not much.
- So, when the Board of Trustee’s assigned me $250,000 to get some projects completed under FTA guidance. I choose to work under the “associated transit improvements” verbiage found in circular 9030.1E The language was so vague, so full of potential, and so very enticing…I had to push the envelope and see what I could do. And boy did that envelope fly open! We have hundreds of success stories to date and I am here to tell you about just a few
- Meet Liz at the Tooele County Health Department. Tooele is a small town at the fringes of our service area This town is like other small towns where bike and pedestrian paths are few or non-existent The Tooele Health Department received a small grant to provide active transportation. But… Liz doesn’t know what that means….
- Here is a typical street in this town. No consistent sidewalks, No bike lanes, No decent opportunities to get anywhere without a car. Where or where can Liz spend her money?
- We partnered with Tooele City to design and paint the City‘s first active transportation project despite the town not having a pedestrian or bike plans. We installed 2 miles of new, buffered bike lanes connecting Main Street transit stops to a regional park, elementary school, and the nearby neighborhoods. Since the paint has dried, there have been 50% less auto/pedestrian accidents on this corridor. Not surprisingly Tooele City is anxious to complete more projects.
- Meet Ben. Director of Salt Lake City’s bike share program. Tireless social entrepreneur Advocate for all things bike-share And every-time see him it makes me want to buy a sweet 3-piece suit
- Ben needed help with the construction of new pads for his 2015 expansion We decided to split cost of construction by incorporating his bike share stations with my bus stops. These stops created a new form of multi-modal transit stops connecting bus stops, bike share stations, protected bike lanes, and more
- Because of this cost-sharing GREENBike was able to purchase more stations than planned The additional stations helped propel a staggering 292% increase in bike share ridership in 2015 This increase was achieved with a mere 34% system expansion, Just this month the Salt Lake City bike share program was awarded largest year to year ridership increase at the B-Cycle World Conference thanks to this partnership
- Meet Justin of Ogden City Ogden City is a vibrant and diverse city at the North end of our service area Justin is the City Engineer and is anxious to improve transit in his community. I reached out to Justin last Fall and asked him if he wanted to partner on some projects in his area. Justin jumped on the idea like this poor brown trout hungry for more.
- Justin directed his engineering department to survey and design dozens of new bus stops His team did this work over the winter months when permitting was slow. He then used surplus funds from his sidewalk budget to pour concrete pads for shelters and benches Every bus stop on this corridor was improved using surplus City resources he had available.
- In exchange for their work on the project, The City wanted to brand the corridor with new custom shelters of their choosing UTA matched the City’s contribution dollar for dollar with the purchase and installation of custom shelters, Now complete, each and every bus stop on these corridors are ADA compliant with new amenities that the community is proud of
- Next lets talk about Big AL Big Al is someone who can operate every piece of machinery out there He frankly doesn’t like Busses, Trains, or transit, He also is not likely to vote for the current transit referendum on the ballot this year But for today’s story, it is only important that he loves to work and live at the town of Alta Utah.
- The town of Alta Utah. A place that gets over 50 feet of snow each year and is home to the best skiing on Earth at Alta and Snowbird Ski Resorts. A quick and easy bus ride from the Salt Lake Valley, if you could find the bus stop underneath piles of frozen snow and ice.
- One thing mountain towns have is machinery, Lots of big and small machines. One day I called Alta and said, “What if I paid for all the concrete, get the Feds pay for the shelters, Pretty please would you dig me a few holes in your spare time?” “Of course,” they said, we will send Big Al over tomorrow and you can tell him where to start.
- Just a few months later and we have multiple new bus stops at 8,000 feet elevation with the best views out there, These shelters are designed to withstand 100 MPH winds and blizzard force conditions, Conditions perfect for skiing powder, This package of bus stops alone is valued at over $250,000 and could never happen with a single party footing the entire bill, But with this partnering approach we now have every ski stop improved, to the delight of tourist and locals alike
- Meet Cherrly… General Manager of Special Services at Utah Transit Authority. Every stops that becomes ADA accessible is critical to her success in delivering service to those in need.
- With the addition of over 100 new ADA compliant bus stops she is seeing something that hasn’t happened in her time with the agency: A drop of over 30% in paratransit deployments along improved corridors such as Justin’s corridor in Ogden. In one corridor alone this equates to operational savings of over $70,000 per year! Joyce can now focus this budget on delivering service to those even further away from the community.
- So all of this partnering and improvements is bound to get some positive attention….but it doesn’t come easy. It takes a lot of effort to get local media to print something positive about the agency. But I am sure that never happens at your town… the News is always letting people know about the good you are doing and not just the bad. So here are just a few headlines from the dozens of positive PR stories that have come from these projects. You too, can be a hero for the community and complete projects that are in need!
