What does it mean by Sociology ?
Sociology is the scientific study of people in group
relations and concerned with people not individual as
members or groups. The word sociology is a combination
of Latin word ‘socius’ which points to society and Greek
word ‘logus’ (means study on a high level. Thus, sociology
means the study of society on a highly generalized or
abstract level. In the other words, the meaning of
sociology is the ‘Science of society’. So sociology is the
science of society.
What is Rural area and Rural Sociology ?
A rural area is an open swath of land that has few homes or
other buildings and not many people and it’s population
density is very low.
Rural sociology is the branch of sociology that studies rural
life, rural social relationships and rural social institution. It
is specialized field of sociology. It deals with the society of
village and rural area.

social organization has still to be created. Such a science is, however, the basic premise
for the renovation of the Indian rural society, so indispensable for the renovation of the

Origin and Development of Rural Sociology
Rural sociology was first originated in the United States Of America.
It has taken more half a century to become establish as a distinct
academic field or professional study in 1908. Rural sociological
society was establish in America in 1937.By 1958 there were about
1000 professional sociologist in America. And Rural sociology crossed
the boundaries of America by the Great Second World War. Rural
sociology became popular in Europe and japan also. There are many
contributors to the development of rural sociology like Charles
sanderson, Burtherfield, Ernest Burnholme and etc.
Subject-Matter of Rural Sociology :
• According to Lawry and Nelson,‘ The subject-matter of rural
sociology is the description analysis of the progress of various of
groups as they exist in the rural environment’. The main task of
rural sociology can be mentioned here. They are as follows :
• Rural Social Structure
• Rural Social Organization
• Characteristics of Rural Society
• Rural Social Stratification
• Study of Rural Social Problems
• Rural Social Institution and Social Life
• Rural Reconstructions , Rural change and Rural Social Planning
Importance of Rural sociology

on a worldwide scale.
