This document discusses the results of workforce surveys conducted in 2010-2011 on rural advanced practice nurses (APNs) and physician assistants (PAs) in Colorado. It finds that APNs and PAs make up an important portion of primary care providers in rural areas, with many counties having no physicians but at least one NP or PA. However, upcoming retirements could exacerbate provider shortages. The document also notes challenges faced by these providers, such as some lacking prescriptive authority and patients being unable to afford needed care due to insurance limitations.
