Documentary: The ‘Un’Social Network

Scheduling: January 16th 2014 - 8:30pm to 9pm
Duration: 27 minutes (including advert break)
Over shoulder shots of people on computer/iPhone using social networks and close up of screens – voiceover
comes in after 5 seconds and introduces topic using statistic of how popular social networking is. After 10
seconds, while these shots are playing, sound bites from interviews are played over the top
Opening titles – montage of ‘free WiFi’ and ‘add us on Facebook’ signs
Interview with app company staff explaining how their business uses social networking to their advantage
– cutaways of staff working on developing apps
Voiceover explaining how social networking can be used to organise events and bring people together –
screengrab of Facebook event page and footage from event play in the background
Montage of negative stories, narrator brings in the other side of perspective uses statistics of suicides
Interview with psychology teacher on effects of cyber bullying – cutaways to screen grabs of someone using
sites like ask.fm
Montage of YouTube clips, discussing the argument between the good and bad points and clip of interview
with a student who doesn’t use networks
Interview with app company discussing business and how it links to social networking – cutaways to ‘Follow
us on Twitter’ ‘Like us on Facebook’ signs
Interview with college student on the positives of social networking – how/why/how often they use it cutaways to people using networks on their phones
Voice over discusses statistics (perspective A – the positive side) whilst montage of screen grabs of
follower/subscriber/like counts play in the background – reconstruction of someone clicking a ‘follow’ or
‘like’ button on a social networking site – voiceover continues onto next frame
Reconstruction of someone downloading app/making a social network account – voiceover discusses statistics
Back to interview w/ college student – effects on everyday life – accessibility, cutaways to people using it in college
Selection of vox pops with people’s answer to what they think are the good points of social networking –
cutaway shot to a ‘Free WiFi’ sign and a cut to a reconstruction of someone using the WiFi on a laptop in a cafe
