ERM is a business management support process for several years and proponents of ERM have been advocating incorporating the ERM process into strategic and business planning to increase its utility. The specific purpose is to reduce the impact of adverse events and be ready to exploit emerging opportunities and adapting the ERM process within the existing strategic and business planning methodology. Organizations that view the ERM process as supporting business strategies should consider positioning it where the primary goals are both to grow the business and to protect value: corporate planning and the business units can be utilized to incorporate ERM into the strategic and annual business planning process with three internal scan elements -

Purpose of conducting the analysis in the context of the scenario.
SWOT analysis is carried out to be able to identify and appraise the internal (strengths and weaknesses) and external (opportunities and threats) environments which affect the operations of the business. This enables the management to recognize factors that influence the functioning of the hospital and hence provide necessary information required to improve and identify the roadblocks to management and planning. SWOT analysis enables the organization to prepare for the opportunities available and exploit them fully, attempt to prevent risks and problems faced. Thereafter, the organization will be able to design reliable and trustworthy strategies during decision making process (Abdel-Basset et al 2018).
Analyze the limitations and advantages of conducting a SWOT analysis.
Advantages
SWOT analysis provides critical and essential information regarding the operations of the business enabling the management to understand the business dealing better. The organization will be able to maximize on areas they are good at(strengths),capitalize on the market niches available by exploring all avenues for continuity of its operations.conversely, the business will be able to deal with the weaknesses posed internally and view threats in different perspective understanding they are there to improve the company but not to bring it into its knees(Abdel-Basset et al 2018).Thereafter, the business will confidently establish its goals and strategies which are aligned with its vision and mission and work tirelessly to achieve the objectives.
Limitations of SWOT analysis
According to Abdel-Basset et al 2018, the analysis only mull over issues that encompasses Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats making it a challenge to deal with the unforeseen issues.Swot analysis categorically identify issues but do not offer solution to the concerns requiring the management to design work breakdown schedule to execute the implementation of the details of swot analysis. When using the SWOT, one is able to obtain several ideas and a lot of information which very few are helpful in the execution of the strategies.Similarly, the SWOT analysis does not provide choices to all the ideas collected making it difficult for the organization to identify which one will work best. SWOT analysis only presents what need to be done, or what posses’ challenges and the prospects of the business. This limitation will require the management to organize strategies and schedule to be followed to execute the contents of the analysis.

Bellevue Hospital and Its Current Services
Bellevue Hospital is a non-profit making organization that is locally owned. It offers a range of services whose aim is better healthcare of the community. To begin with, the hospital offers a range of ambulatory services on-site. They provide patients with high quality and convenient care in outpatient and private setting. Most patients do not like receiving medication through oral, injection, or infusion, but prefer the use of IV. Bellevue Hospital also offers aquatic therapy, which provides patients with a chance to receive therapeutic services with low impact. It has been proven that pain is typically minimized or eliminated in aquatic therapy since the body is supported by water, which in turn offloads the weight directed at joints.
Additionally, the hospital provides cardiac rehabilitation services for clients who have already undergone surgery and are recovering. This program seeks to speed up the recovery of the patients and also minimize the chances of it re-occurring in the future. Patients learn how to improve physical fitness and exercise through this program (Stiehl, 2017). Also, the hospital offers specialized education for diabetic patients to help them create and maintain a healthy lifestyle through topics such as monitoring, education, medication, exercise, and diet. Bellevue Hospital, also using advanced technology, offers diagnostic imaging convenient services that fit various needs of a whole family.
Moreover, it provides family health services through different appointments, and they often accept new patients. Their rehabilitation team can complete services that are related to work for families so that they improve their safety and health, productivity, minimize injuries, and reduce costs. Besides, the hospital gives full lactation services, and they support the rights of the baby to breastfeed.
Ways the Organization’s Mission, Vision, and Goals Serve Its Stakeholders
The mission statement helps the stakeholders by taking care of the patients. Bellevue works to prevent illness, treat the injured, and heal the sick among its stakeholders (William, N. R., & Joan, R. (2015). In addition, through their mission, they protect their trust so that it can be a progressive and quality healthcare facility. Using its vision statement, the hospital ensures that its stakeholders have the necessary resources which could help them attain high health levels throughout life. In addition, they can benefit from the hospital through its courage, integrity, compassion, and respect for their confidentiality and individuality. Bellev ...

Situational Analysis
Managers do a situational analysis to get insight into the capabilities, clientele, and external business climate of their company, and this study makes use of a variety of data collecting techniques. Factors like competitiveness and marketing ethics are included in the list of external and internal marketing influences on Bellevue, as are the services that will be used to market the community.
Marketing Factors
Internal and external marketing factors have a significant impact on healthcare organizations. Internal marketing factors refer to the internal resources, capabilities, and limitations of the healthcare organization (Cellucci et al., 2014). Internal marketing factors include things like the hospital's reputation, the quality of its staff and facilities, and its financial stability. Internal marketing factors can also include the hospital's mission, vision, and strategic goals, as well as its culture and values.
External marketing factors refer to the external environment in which the healthcare organization operates. These can include things like changes in the healthcare industry, technological advancements, economic conditions, and competition from other healthcare providers (Berkowitz, 2021). External marketing factors can also include demographic changes in the community served by the hospital, as well as the healthcare needs and preferences of the population (Berkowitz, 2021).
Service Proposal
A mental health program could be a valuable service for Bellevue Hospital to market, as mental health is an important aspect of overall health and wellness, and access to mental health services can be a challenge for many individuals. The mental health program proposed above could potentially address both a weakness and an opportunity for Bellevue Hospital.
As a weakness, the hospital may face challenges in terms of attracting patients seeking mental health services. This could be due to a variety of factors, such as competition from other healthcare providers, a lack of awareness about the hospital's mental health services, or a perception that the hospital is not a top choice for mental health care. By marketing a comprehensive mental health program, the hospital can address this weakness by increasing awareness of its services and attracting more patients seeking mental health care through social media adverts.
As an opportunity, the proposed mental health program could also present an opportunity for the hospital to expand its services and meet the healthcare needs of the community. Mental health is an important aspect of overall health and wellness, and access to mental health services can be a challenge for many individuals. By offering a range of mental health services, the hospital can provide an important resource for the community and position itself as a leader in mental health care (Cellucci et al., 2014). This can also help the hospital to impro.

Measurement and Analysis Case Study:
Boston Children’s Hospital; Boston, Massachusetts
Warbird develops custom data measurement tool to help world-renowned children’s hospital increase international market share
The Opportunity
Recognized as one of the most prestigious and high quality tertiary and quaternary care centers for children in the world, Boston Children’s Hospital sought to increase its share of the global market for children’s healthcare services. According to CFO David Kirshner, although Children’s is renowned for several areas of clinical expertise, there was growing concern about overseas competitors. “We needed to get our arms around how to best measure our international business information flow and ability to process our patients in a timely and effective manner.”
David knew that hospital decision-makers would need concise and timely data about the strengths and weaknesses of the international business and patient flow process within the Children’s system in order to grow international market share. He engaged Warbird Consulting Partners, a professional services firm specializing in value-driven organizational solutions, to develop a measurement and analysis tool designed specifically for hospital executives and physician leaders.
The
Solution
David and Steve Nichol, Children’s lead director of the measurement effort, worked with Doug Fenstermaker, Warbird Consulting Partners’ managing director and leader of the company’s healthcare practice. A former healthcare executive with 18 years’ experience as a hospital CFO, Doug helped David and Steve develop a detailed measurement device that identified core indicators, process-oriented performance indicators and data elements that would need to be captured. The data would be provided in an easy-to-use dashboard interface that both meshed with and reflected progress on Children’s newly-developed international business strategic plan.
The project was completed in approximately 90 days and results were presented to the internal board that governs international business, chaired by Alan B. Retik, M.D. During this time, project managers also partnered with Huron Consulting Group’s higher education practice to assist in the creation of a long-range strategic plan for international business development at Boston Children’s Hospital. Assessment 2
Quality Improvement Proposal
Overview:
Write a quality improvement proposal, 5–7 pages in length, that provides your recommendations for expanding a hospital's HIT to include quality metrics that will help the organization qualify as an accountable care organization.
Health care has undergone a transformation since the release of the Institute of Medicine's 2000 report
To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System.
The report highlighted medical errors as a contributing factor leading to poor patient outcomes. The Institute of Medicine challenged organizations to implement evidence-based performance improvement strategies in order to improve patient quality and safety. Multiple governmental and regulatory agencies, such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (AHRQ), vowed to strengthen and improve incentives for participation, safety, quality, and efficiency in accountable care organizations (ACOs).
Health information technology (HIT) performs an essential role in improving health outcomes of individuals, the community, and populations. Health organizations, consumer advocacy groups, and regulatory committees have made a commitment to explore current and future opportunities that HIT offers to continue momentum to meet the Institute of Medicine's goal of improving safety and quality.
Understanding HIT is important to improving individual, community, and population access to health care and health information. HIT enables quick and easy access to information for both patients and providers. Accessible information has been shown to improve the patient care experience and reduce redundancies, thereby reducing health care costs.
This assessment provides an opportunity for you to make recommendations for expanding a hospital's HIT in ways that will help the hospital qualify as an ACO.
By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:
Competency 2: Explain the relationship between care coordination and evidence-based data.
Recommend ways to expand an organization's HIT to include quality metrics.
Identify potential problems that can arise with data gathering systems and outputs.
Competency 3: Use health information technology to guide care coordination and organizational practice.
Describe the main focus of information gathering in health care and how it contributes to guiding the development of organizational practice.
Competency 4: Communicate effectively with diverse audiences, in an appropriate form and style, consistent with applicable organizational, professional, and scholarly standards.
Write clearly and concisely, using correct grammar and mechanics.
Support main points, claims, and conclusions with relevant and credible evidence, correctly formatting citations and references using APA style.

Introduction
The organization chosen for this assignment is Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC) in Southern California. It is a public, nonprofit acute hospital facility in addition to four offsite facilities. PVHMC serves two neighboring counties of Los Angeles and San Bernardino County. The mission of PVHMC is to provide high quality, cost effective health care services to residents of the greater Pomona Valley. Over the next five years, the hospital will complete construction of a new Outpatient Pavilion and expanded Emergency services to better meet the needs of the community.
Products and Services Provided
PVHMC offers a wide range of products and services related to healthcare. In addition to having an emergency department, some of the services provided are oncology, women and children’s care, cardiac and vascular care, kidney stones, physical therapy, robotic surgery, and sleep disorders. Specific to women’s health, PVHMC has specialized equipment to create 3D mammograms. The robotic surgery utilizes a state of the art console that operates four robotic arms allowing for precise surgical incisions. A state of the art cardiac rehab program compliments cardiovascular services offered (Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, 2013).
Addressing Problems with Research
According to the American College of Healthcare Executives, one of the problems or dilemmas that healthcare facilities face daily is financial challenges. This has been an issue for the past five to ten years. PVHMC struggles on a daily basis with figuring out how the facility will gain profit. This is a problem that management and personnel can address with research by researching grants that will help support some of the programs and healthcare the facility needs to care for the people.
There are other concerns that PVHMC must address with research, competition and the latest products. It is important the company keeps up with its competition in which giving the best care to patients is important. There is so much that goes into that concern as well with the highest level of customer service to pair with the hospital’s healthcare. Also, the products play a part in helping to cure pain and diseases. Hospitals must be competitive with the latest technology, equipment and treatment plans for patients. The best way to do this is through market research. Market research would provide the hospital with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions to achieve the overarching strategic plan.
The quest for cutting edge medicine creates a major dilemma. The high cost of delivering care has been culprit to several hospitals closing its emergency ro ...

With regard to the review of the current financial statement, HMA is in a dangerous financial state as a result of the present increasing debts and legal woes. The Office of the Inspector General, Justice Department, and the Department of Health and Human Services served the organization with summons regarding a software program that was used by ED doctors and the records from the emergency department. Some reports suggested that there was pressure from the company’s hospitals management to admit patients from emergency rooms so as to maximize profits. Paul Meyer, former compliance director, claimed that HMA’s fraudulent activities could attract government investigation (Britt, 2012).
The common stock of Health Management Associates was owned by almost 850 shareholders, as per the records of December 31, 2012, with hundreds of institutional investors included. HMA had expanded to include 70 hospitals situated in 15 states, with roughly 10,562 present licensed beds. In 2012, HMA realized about $5.9 billion in net revenue (Britt, 2012).

Organization’s Mission, Vision and Values
The New Generation General Hospital is a health care institution, which intends to be in the business of offering high quality health care services to the members of the public, in the state of California. The cost of health care in the recent years has been on the rise, making it unaffordable to many people. The main mission of this healthcare organization will be to make health care services accessible and affordable to all. In order to achieve this mission the hospital will put in place structures aimed at lowering the cost of operations, with an aim of ensuring that its services are charged prices that can be afforded by all groups of people, be either the rich or the poor. Comment by Microsoft account: Good. Decided on an appropriate health care organization for which to develop a strategic plan. If using a new organization, look ahead and be sure you can address all aspects of the project. You may need to identify data and information from a proxy (very similar) organization. If using an actual existing organization, the strategic plan should be based on a new product or new service within the organization. Then you’ll use the research and theories we are addressing in the course to make your recommendations. Okay?
Furthermore, quality health care is the key to success of any given country or region. For purposes of this organization contributing to the economic growth of the state of California its vision will be to provide high quality health services to all people from all walks of lives. The main areas of quality that the hospital will focus on will be patient safety, patient satisfaction and outcomes. More emphasis will be put on the organization quality assurance department so that it can put in place measures aimed at enhancing the quality of care offered to patients at any given time.
The main values of the hospital that will guide all the stakeholders, towards attaining its vision and mission will be, honesty, professionalism, kindness, privacy, trustworthiness and commitment. The values will be key when it comes to enhancing the quality and accessibility of the health services that will be offered by the organization to the target customers.
Strategic Planning Model
Given that this is a new health care organization, it will be using the conventional strategic planning model. This model will be suitable for the organization, given that it has adequate resources to pursue its long term goals of.

ITS IMPORTANT TO MEET THE COMPETENCES (That's how they evaluate the work).
Nursing within an organization is a critical component of health care delivery and is an essential ingredient in patient outcomes (Kelly & Tazbir, 2014). The concern for quality care that flows from evidence-based practice generates a desired outcome. Without these factors, a nurse cannot be an effective leader. It is important to lead not only from this position but from knowledge and expertise.
By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:
Competency 2: Explain the accountability of the nurse leader for decisions that affect health care delivery and patient outcomes.
(IMPORTANT) -Describe accountability tools and procedures used to measure effectiveness.
Competency 3: Apply management strategies and best practices for health care finance, human resources, and materials allocation decisions to improve health care delivery and patient outcomes.
(IMPORTANT) -Develop an evidence-based plan for health care delivery.
Competency 4: Apply professional standards of moral, ethical, and legal conduct in professional practice.
(IMPORTANT) -Apply professional and legal standards in support of a care plan.
Competency 5: Communicate in manner that is consistent with the expectations of a nursing professional.
(IMPORTANT) -Write content clearly and logically, with correct use of grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and current APA style.
Preparation
Refer to the Capella library and the Internet for supplemental resources to help you complete this assessment.
Instructions
Deliverable:
Develop an evidence-based plan for health care delivery.
Scenario:
The hospital where you work has an issue with increased readmissions within 30 days of discharge. After examining the core measures, it was found that heart failure was the most common core measure disease process experiencing the highest rate of readmissions. The leadership team has given your team the charge of developing a nurse-run outpatient heart failure clinic. The purpose of this clinic is to ensure that discharge education is presented to the patient in an orderly, consistent manner and complies with evidence-based practice protocols. Since these patients may be discharged from a variety of areas in the facility, having the heart failure clinic staff take ownership of the process will improve both consistency and compliance. There are cardiologists that interact with the staff and patients, but the day-to-day operations of the clinic are designed and supported by the nurses as they interact with appropriate members of the other health care team disciplines promoting the best care for the heart failure patients.
As a member of the nurse team, you have been asked to develop

As a member of the nurse team, you have been asked to develop
one
component
of the clinic.

Mill proposes his Art of Life, but he also insists that it is not very developed -- there is an immense amount of work to be done to get it in shape. We know relatively little about what will actually make our lives richly moral, useful, and beautiful. What sort of things might contribute to improving our understanding of how to enrich our lives in this way? That is, what could someone do to develop and extend the Art of Life?

milies (most with teenage children) and the Baby Boomers (teens and college-age young people). The film industry and the changes to it are deeply divided in this schism. On the one hand, musicals (Sound of Music), World War II war films (The Great Escape) and historical epics (Dr. Zhivago) drove the adult market. Rebellion, sex and individual-minded heroes drove the youth market (Easy Rider, Bonnie and Clyde, The Graduate.) By the end of the decade, the tastes of the counter-culture youth had won. Anti-war film (Catch-22), flawed characters as heroes (The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly) and sexual issues (Midnight Cowboy, Butterfield 8, Valley of the Dolls) dominated the screen.
Question 1: What are some of the benefits of the Boomer generation's rebellion and changes to Hollywood in the 1960s?
Question 2: What are some of the drawbacks of having film dominated by the demands of an audience that was under the age of 25?

Migration
The human population has lived a rural lifestyle through most of history. The world’s population, however, is quickly becoming urbanized as people migrate to the cities. Developed nations have a higher percentage of urban residents than less developed countries. However, urbanization is occurring rapidly in many less developed countries, and it is expected that most urban growth will occur in less developed countries during the next decades.
In this Case, you are to select a country (not Nigeria and Canada) which is experiencing rural-urban migration and answer the following questions.
1. Identify the Country you have selected and briefly describe its demographics.
2. Discuss the factors that are driving rural-urban migration in your selected country? (Hint: Migration is often explained in terms of either “push factors” – conditions in the place of origin which are perceived by migrants as detrimental to their well-being or economic security, and “pull factors” – the circumstances in new places that attract individuals to move there).
3. Describe the impact of rural-urban migration in your selected country? Consider health, environmental, economic and social implications.

Bellevue Hospital And The Heart Health Services
Introduction of Bellevue hospital and the heart health service
Bellevue Hospital is the oldest public hospital in the USA and
boasts having the most effective staff in line with the goals of
the hospital in caregiving. Located at 462 First Avenue in the
Kip bay of Manhattan in New York City. Currently, it serves an
average of 460000 outpatients and has grown to be one of the
most efficient hospitals in New York City. The heart health
service is housed in the cardiology, and cardiothoracic surgery
department which is world-renowned and the heart health
program is among the few departments in the world and has a
state of the art labs and have “our door to STEMI” produces
2. better services beyond the average (Root, Schonfeld, Williams,
& Poppers, 2017).
Mission, vision and strategic goal of the organisation
The mission of the hospital is to provide the highest quality of
care to all the needy people in New York and all over the world
with honesty, integrity, and with dignity even if the patient is
not in a position to pay for the service that has been provided to
them. The vision of the hospital is to be among the top ten
hospitals in the country as far as the provision of quality service
is concerned. Further, the hospital has a strategic goal of
making the hospital the most popular in terms of compliance
and service delivery so that all the people would work better at
all time without any failure (Bellevue, 2016). Another strategic
goal is improving communication so that the service delivery
can be first, efficient and up to date.
The current state of the service using the marketing framework
The current state of the service is that it has invested in
technology to serve the goals and ambitions of the hospital. It
has incorporated technology to come up with the state of the art
lab where people all over the country can be served. It is one of
the hospitals where open-heart surgery is performed. Since the
need of the hospital is to be the go-to place, it has ensured that
the appropriate technology, leadership, and correct values to
ensure that the correct virtues of the hospitals are maintained
for better service delivery.
Stakeholders of the organization using the marketing framework
The Bellevue hospital has several stakeholders who interact in a
very effective way to maintain the business in the hospital. The
first stakeholders are the patients who pay for the services and
the physicians who work around the clock to ensure that the
patients always get what they pay for. The government is yet
another stakeholder mainly mandated to monitor and ensure that
the organization operates within the dictates of the law.
Insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies all work
together to ensure that the goals of the organization achieve the
targets.
3. How the current state of the service aligns with the mission,
vision and strategic goals?
The current state of the heart health service is perfectly aligned
to the mission, vision and strategic goal because the
organization has maintained three important concepts in their
operation. The first concept is innovativeness and application of
technology to provide better services to the population.
Secondly it applies strong leadership which ensures that staff
are well trained to partake the duties that are assigned to them.
In the long run, the goal of serving the people with dignity will
be achieved because of the way the leadership handles the
entries and trains the physicians will achieve good results.
Being in line with the strategic goals and being top ten hospitals
in the application of technology in service delivery (Root,
Schonfeld, Williams, & Poppers, 2017).
The target population of the heart health service by Bellevue
hospital is a range of all people from different geographies in
the world but mostly in New York. Special consideration is
however given to some categories of people like the LGBTQ
youths who are prone to the depressing issues causing heart
disease. The older people also receive special consideration and
can lead to better treatment. In a nutshell, Bellevue heart health
program targets both the young and the old and serves with
dignity because today's diets have been affected by junk and
lifestyle diseases are prone to all the people.

Owner’s Objective - Friedman wants to increase the quality of
service
by decreasing class sizes and also by expanding student
enrollments.
Tuition increase?
13. For children ages 2 to 5, most parents would support a 25
percent
tuition increase, and nearly 50 percent would support a 50
percent
increase.
Of the 5-to-6 age group parents, nearly three fourths did not
want any
increase. The remainder said they would support a 25 percent
increase
but no more.

Case Questions
Look at each decision separately, as incremental to the current
situation, and
evaluate the marginal profit:
14. a. If class size is decreased (keeping the same 80 students),
what increase in
tuition is necessary to keep the current monthly profit level?
b. Without regard to (a), is it profitable to create the new class
from the
waiting list? Explain.
c. Use the new fee structure as found in (a). Is it profitable to
move to
smaller class sizes, if new full classes are created and filled to
their new
maximums using the waiting list? Show calculations.
d. Is a class for infant care profitable if tuition is the same as
the proposed
class tuition for the 2-to-3 age group?
Part A
If class size is decreased (keeping the same 80 students), what
increase in tuition is necessary to keep the
current monthly profit level?
For Q1, since the center is operational, all of these decisions are
based on incremental data. That is, we
look for incremental revenues and costs. For Part A, you will
calculate the Incremental Costs for each Age
Group and then determine the Tuition Change Rate. Below is
the example for the age Group 2-3 and you
can follow the same logic and complete the calculations for the
other three Age Groups.
15. Part A
Salaries (2 instructors x $1,600) $3,200
Staff benefits [($3,200 x 10%) + (2 x $200)] 720
Incremental costs $3,920
• $3,920/20=$196
• 196/$320=61.25%
Part B
Without regard to (a), is it profitable to create the new class
from the waiting list? Explain.
Which group age will have a new class? Hint – the one has a
large waiting list.
Incremental revenue ($260 x no. of students) $2,600
Minus incremental costs:
Instructor's salary given amount
Staff benefits [(10% x $salary) + $200] xx
Food ($1.25 x no. of students x 22 days) xx
Variable supplies ($1 x no. of students) xx 2,245
Incremental profit $355
16. What is your conclusion based on the number?
Part C
Use the new fee structure as found in (a). Is it profitable to
move to
smaller class sizes, if new full classes are created and filled to
their new
maximums using the waiting list? Show calculations.
(c) Again, here you will do some incremental analysis. The
check figures are provided.
Incremental revenue:
Increased fees, old students:
2-3 age group ($196*20) $3,920
3-4 age group
4-5 age group
5-6 age group
New students:
2-3 age group ($516*5) $2,580
3-4 age group
17. 4-5 age group
5-6 age group
Total incremental revenue $16,455
Minus incremental costs:
Instructors (7 new class * $1,600) $11,200
Staff benefits
Food
Variable supplies
Total incremental costs (14,205)
Incremental profit $2,250
This alternative increases profits by $2,250.
Part C
Incremental revenue:
Increased fees, old students:
2-3 age group ($196 x 20) $3,920
3-4 age group ($130.67 x 15) 1,960
18. 4-5 age group ($130.67 x 15) 1,960
5-6 age group ($ 65.33 x 30) 1,960
New students:
2-3 age group ($516 x 5 students) 2,580
3-4 age group ($410.67 x 1 student) 411
4-5 age group ($410.67 x 1 student) 411
5-6 age group ($325.33 x 10 students) 3,253
Total incremental revenue $16,455
Minus incremental costs:
Instructors (7 new classes x $1,600) $11,200
Staff benefits [(10% x $11,200) + $1,400] 2,520
Food ($1.25 x 17 students x 22 days) 468
Variable supplies ($1 x 17 students) 17
Total incremental costs (14,205)
Incremental profit $2,250
Part D
19. Is a class for infant care profitable if tuition is the same as the
proposed class
tuition for the 2-to-3 age group?

Incremental costs:
Instructor
Staff benefits
Variable supplies
Incremental profit $615
Hint – 5 new students, 1 instructor,
CASE 9A – MIDDLEHURST HOUSE
Middlehurst House is a daycare center/preschool which operates
as a partnership of George
Friedman and Bill Compton. The center is in a city that has a
large base of twoincome families
who have a need for quality day care. The two men started the
center this year. Compton
contributed $40,000 to get the business started—to purchase
equipment and to operate through
20. the early months. Friedman, who previously managed another
center, is the director of the center
and draws $2,000 per month for his services. Partnership profits
and losses, after Friedman's
salary, are split 75 percent for Compton and 25 percent for
Friedman.
Middlehurst House operates from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday
through Friday. It is in a single
building that has a capacity limit of 120 children and meets city
and state regulations. At present,
the center has six classes, all at maximum sizes, structured as
follows:
Number
of classes
Children
per class
Total
children
Monthly tuition
per child
2 to 3 2 10 20 $320
3 to 4 1 15 15 280
4 to 5 1 15 15 280
21. 5 to 6 2 15 30 260
Class sizes are determined by state law which sets a limit on the
number of children per
instructor. The center uses one instructor per classroom.
Tuition is charged monthly. Minor adjustments are made on an
individual basis. In October, the
most recent month with data available, revenues were $21,500
($22,600 less $1,100
adjustments). Monthly revenues should be rather stable since
classes are full most of the time.
Expenses for October were:
Salaries for instructors $9,600
Salary of director 2,000
Salary of part-time cook 900
Food expenses 2,200
Staff benefits expenses 2,450
Supplies expenses 600
Occupancy and other administrative
expenses 3,250
22. Total expenses $21,000
Fixed expenses are the salary of the part-time cook and
occupancy and other administrative
expenses. The salary of the director is fixed—as a partnership,
this is in reality a distribution of
profits, but it is included in expenses for comparative purposes.
Food is $1.25 per student per day. Staff benefits are 10 percent
of salaries plus $200 per person
for benefit programs for instructors and the part-time cook.
Variable supplies are $1 per student
per month. Step costs are salaries for instructors, averaging
$1,600 per instructor per class.
Friedman wants to increase the quality of service by decreasing
class sizes and also by
expanding student enrollments. These alternatives are
interrelated. Friedman thinks that class
sizes are too large and that children are not getting the
individual attention they require.
Friedman surveyed parents of all 80 students to measure their
support for a tuition increase tied
to a reduction in class size. For children ages 2 to 5, most
23. parents would support a 25 percent
tuition increase, and nearly 50 percent would support a 50
percent increase. Of the 5-to-6 age
group parents, nearly three fourths did not want any increase.
The remainder said they would
support a 25 percent increase but no more.
Proper class size is very subjective. However, Friedman feels
that he could achieve a child/
instructor ratio of 6 to 1 for the 2-to-3 age group, an 8 to 1 ratio
for the 3-to-4 and 4-to-5 age
groups, and a 10 to 1 ratio for the 5-to-6 age group.
The center has easily maintained the 80-student level, with each
class full. Friedman keeps in
touch with waiting-list parents to make certain each is still
interested. This list provides children
when someone leaves the center. The current waiting list is as
follows:
Age
group Number of children
Age
group Number of children
2 to 3 5 4 to 5 4
3 to 4 7 5 to 6 11
24. Friedman does not start a new class unless more students are on
the waiting list than are required
per class. Obviously, enough students are on the 5-to-6 age
group waiting list to start a new class.
Lately, however, he has wondered if the center could make a
profit by starting classes with fewer
than the requisite number, taking the chance that new students
would appear and could be added
immediately.
Information from his various inquiries implies that a potential
market for quality infant care (0 to
24 months) exists. Friedman doesn't think this expansion would
be profitable. However, he has
never done an analysis of the situation and has not thought
about an appropriate tuition. He
believes that the infant/instructor ratio in his center should be
no higher than 5 infants to one
instructor. The center would have no food costs for the infants.
Compton will only agree to Friedman's suggested changes if the
center will continue to operate
at or above the current profit level.

26. Questions:
1. Look at each decision separately, as incremental to the
current situation, and evaluate the
marginal profit:
a. If class size is decreased (keeping the same 80 students),
what increase in tuition
is necessary to keep the current monthly profit level?
b. Without regard to (a), is it profitable to create the new class

2. Write a brief memo to Friedman and Compton highlighting
any concerns that underlie
the analyses you have performed in Part 1.
27. BUS630 Week 5 Case Guidance
Class,
The Week 5 Case is somewhat challenging. Below are some
approaches -
For Q1, since the center is operational, all of these decisions are
based on incremental data. That is, we look for incremental
revenues and costs.
For Part A, you will calculate the Incremental Costs for each
Age Group and then determine the Tuition Change Rate. Below
is the example for the age Group 2-3 and you can follow the
same logic and complete the calculations for the other three Age
Groups.
Percentage
New
Increase
Instructor
Average over
to Student Total Number of Incremental
Tuition Current
Age Ratio Children New Classes Costs Increase
Tuition
2-3 6:1 20 2 $3,920
$196.00 61%
34 47%
4-5 47%
56 25%
(b) To determine is profitable, you can calculate the incremental
profit from these 10 students. Please follow the following
template and determine the incremental profit. $355 is the check
figure.
28. Incremental revenue $
Minus incremental costs:
Instructor's salary
Staff benefits
Food
Variable supplies
Incremental profit $355
(c) Again, here you will do some incremental analysis. The
check figures are provided.
Incremental revenue:
Increased fees, old students:
23 age group ($196*20) $3,920
34 age group
45 age group
56 age group
New students:
23 age group ($516*5) $2,580
34 age group
45 age group
56 age group
Total incremental revenue
$16,455
Minus incremental costs:
Instructors (7 new class * $1,600)
$11,200
Staff benefits
Food
Variable supplies
Total incremental costs
29. (14,205)
Incremental profit $2,250
This alternative increases profits by $2,250.
(d) Again, calculate the Incremental Profit for the New infant
care:
Incremental revenue
Incremental costs:
Instructor
Staff benefits
Variable supplies
Incremental profit $615
The infant care class is profitable since it contributes $615
to net income.
