The verumontanum is a smooth filling defect along the posterior wall of the prostatic
urethra. The membranous urethra is the shortest segment (~ 1-1.5 cm) and passes
through the urogenital diaphragm. The paired Cowper glands lie within the urogenital
diaphragm but their ducts extend ~ 2 cm to enter the bulbous urethra.
The bulbous urethra begins just below urogenital diaphragm at the bulbomembranous
junction (BMJ). Just distal to the BMJ, there is a conical widening of the bulbous
urethra called the "cone". A musculotendinous sling of the bulbospongiosus muscle
may cause an indentation just distal to the cone. This should not be confused with a
stricture. The proximal-to-mid bulbous urethra widens and is termed the "sump".
There is a mild angulation of the urethra at the penoscrotal junction. The penile or
pendulous urethra is distal to this point
