Material of learning
Narrativetext is a piece of writing that tells a story. The story can be imagery or based on a
real incident. A narrative always deals with some problems which lead to the climax and then
turn into a solution to the problem. It deals with unusual and unexpected development of
events.
Social/communicative purpose:
To entertain or amuse the readers or listener.
To tell a story about something or someone
Example of narrative text:
Short stories, folk tales, legends, myths, fables, novels, cartoon strips, picture books.
Generic Structure/text organization
Narratives are usually organized to include
Orientation
This stage introduces the main character/in a setting of time and place. Sets the scene(where
and when the story happen) and introduces the participants of the story (who and what is
involved in the story).
Complication
In this stage, a sequence of event is disrupted or changed in some way so that the pattern of
events becomes a problem for one or more of the characters or tells the beginning of the
problem which leads to the crisis (climax) of the main participants.
Resolution
The problem or the complication is resolved or provides solution to the problem either in a
happy ending or in a sad (tragic) ending.
Coda/ reorientation
This stage is optional. It makes explicit how the character/s has changed and what has been
learned from the experience or gives a closing remark to the story. It consists of a moral
lesson or advice.
Language feature/ generic feature
1. Past tense, e.g. the lion woke up and grabbed the mouse in his sharp claws
2. Nouns, e.g. lion, mouse, hunter, etc

Man’s Best Friend
A long time ago, there were two friends who lived together. They lived in a small
house in Scotland. Their names were john and Bobby.
John and bobby were not rich, but they were happy. They had good food to eat when
they were hungry. They also had a small TV.
John and bobby did not family, but they were never lonely. They always did many
things together. They worked and played together in their garden. When they got bored,
they liked to take a walk. After walk, john cooked dinner. John and bobby ate dinner and
then sat in front of the TV. They were never lonely because they had each other.
Then, one day, john got sick and died. He was buried in a cemetery. After john was
buried, bobby stood at his grave. He cried and cried. He said,” john, let’s go home.” Bobby
went home, but later he came back to the cemetery. He sat down near john’s grave. He
stayed there all night.
Bobby stayed at the cemetery the next day, and the next day, and the next day. He
never left the cemetery. He stayed there for 14 years. When the weather was cold, he slept in
a small house in the cemetery. When the weather was warm, he slept on the ground near
john’s grave. Finally, bobby died, too. Friends buried him in a little grave next to john. why
was the grave little? John’s best friend was dog.

Cinderella
Once upon a time there was a beautiful girl called Cinderella. She lived with
her stepsister and stepmother. They were very bossy. She had to do all the housework.
One day an invitation to the ball came to the family. Her stepsister did not let
her go Cinderella was very sad. The stepsister went to the ball without her.
Fortunately, the fairy godmother came and helped her to get to the ball. At
the ball, Cinderella danced with the prince. The prince fell in love with her, and then he
married her. They lived happily ever after.
