validity
• For example:
• Survey-based

are not treated (Smith &

Consumer report found
that 87% of individuals

reported that they felt
better (Seligman, 1995).

• Meta-analysis

Perceived Effectiveness of Self-Help Material
Research Question #2:
Do people see self-help as effective in achieving their goals?
19. So why does this matter?
• People spend billions of dollars a year on self-
help materials.
• Self-help is perceived as effective in assisting
individuals with a variety of different
circumstances.
• though self-help is not comparable to
psychotherapy, the 75% of people who do not
seek help through psychotherapy at least have
viable alternatives.
20. Limitations
• Effectiveness of specific
genres of self-help
• Why self-help has the
potential for negative
outcomes.
• More specific assessment
of time time between use
and survey.
Future Directions
• Bias on utilization
• Broad definition of self-
help materials
• Did not assess for

People find themselves in need of help for a variety of different reasons.
Psychological- depression/ anxiety
Social- interpersonal romantic relationships,
Occupational-work or school problems
How do people find help in these situations?
Helen
This begs the question: If people seek help how do we know they are receiving the help they desire ?
Bryan
To contextualize the current study, if you consider traditional psychotherapy – it has been studied in two ways. The first being efficacy studies, that look at ______, and establish internal validity… an example of this type would be experimental design. The second being effectiveness studies, that look at_______, and establish external validity … an example would be survey-based research.
Psychotherapy research seeks to answer these questions through two different research designs:
Efficacy studies and Effectiveness studies.
Efficacy studies Look to Empirically validate the validity of an intervention through controlled circumstances
Done through experimental methods with control groups and random assignment
Helen
Looks to evaluate perceived effectiveness of an intervention
Example survey based studies

Helen
Through as consumer report

Bryan
Reasons people don’t seek psychotherapy
It’s expensive

Time consuming
