In this webinar, we were discussing about Dynamic Routing with RIP (Routing Information Protocol). we discussed what is it, why we use it, the benefits of RIP, how it is works, and how its implemented on RouterOS.

What is RIP (features)
â—Ź Routing Information Protocol (RIP)
â—Ź RIP is distance vector routing protocol
â—Ź Administrative distance for RIP is 120 (highest. OSPF=110)
â—Ź Supports classless routing but RIPv2 also support VLSM
â—Ź RIP use the Hop count for metric or choosing best path
â—Ź RIP is suitable for small network and it support only 15 hop count and a route
at 16 hops will be unreachable and inaccessible.
â—Ź RIP send its routing updates every 30 seconds to multicast address 224.0.0.9
â—Ź RIP supports authentication
â—Ź RIP carry 25 routes in its routing updates and if you use authentication then
24 routes per RIP message. RIP Uses UDP port 520.
â—Ź RIP provides different mechanism for avoiding loops in networks
â—‹ split horizon
â—‹ poison reverse

RIP version
â—Ź RIPv1 (version 1)
â—Ź RIPv2 (version 2, VLMS and authentication support)
â—‹ Recommended to be used
â—Ź RIP NG (new generation, support IPV6)

When to use RIP?
â—Ź On small network
â—Ź If you want to have simple administration
â—Ź Can be applied on edge of the network
