Co-developed by Jefferson Awards for Public Service and Deloitte, it is now in over 250 High Schools.
Each spring, Student Leaders from the participating schools compete in regional competitions. They are asked to report on the implementation of the program, and the impact they've had, both in their schools and within their communities.
Common Thread: Spring 2017
The newsletter provides updates on Xavier High School's Class of 2017 graduation, where 173 seniors received diplomas. It discusses new traditions like the seniors' walk through their elementary schools. Academically, the class received over $14 million in scholarships. Lakeside Plastics employees have raised almost $20,000 over 15 years for the Windsor Downtown Mission through various fundraising events. The employees participate in monthly dress down days and hold bake sales, food sales, and raffles. In 2010, they donated their largest gift of $8,000. One beneficiary of the Mission's services is Sam, a 62-year-old man who immigrated to Canada 22 years ago and is now relying on the Mission during financial difficulties.

The OCSC provided over $33,000 in donations to various charitable organizations in 2012 that support the Fort Riley community, offers social and volunteer activities for members such as luncheons and fundraising events, and encourages all military spouses to join in order to foster friendship and support networks while giving back to the local community.
Kids Care Club H2O for Life
The fifth grade Kids Care Club has developed a personal connection by adopting a school in Haiti: Dumarsais estime de Port au Ceil. Through project Operation Water Well, Sope Creek will be able to bring running water to this school. The water crisis in Haiti was worsened by the recent earthquake and Sope Creek students want to help.
Sope Creek Elementary is partnering with H2O for Life (www.h2oforlifeschools.org) to help make this possible. Every penny raised by our students will be matched by Save the Children and 100% of the money we collect will go directly to digging a well at our adopted school.
The Kids Care Club will be collecting donations on March 3, 4, & 5. Parents can make tax-deductible donations by writing a check directly to H2O for Life Schools, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
KoW Donors
The Knights of Waukesha is a group of six friends from Waukesha, WI who have created a scholarship fund to give back to their community. Their $500 annual scholarship helps local high school seniors pay for college. Their vision is to grow the fund into an endowment to offer more scholarships and provide mentoring for recipients. They are fundraising with a goal of $50,000 to sustainably offer scholarships in the future.

The DECA chapter at Cherry Creek High School partnered with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) for their community service project. They set goals to raise money to send children to MDA summer camp, educate their school and community about muscular dystrophy, and enhance DECA's community outreach. Members volunteered at MDA camp and organized various fundraising activities throughout the year. They succeeded in raising over $4,600 and committing over 2,400 hours to support MDA families and find a cure for this disease. The project helped DECA members develop leadership, social, and community service skills while making a positive impact.

Combined Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) Vessel List.
The best available, up-to-date information on all fishing and related vessels that appear on the illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing vessel lists published by Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) and related organisations. The aim of the site is to improve the effectiveness of the original IUU lists as a tool for a wide variety of stakeholders to better understand and combat illegal fishing and broader fisheries crime.
To date, the following regional organisations maintain or share lists of vessels that have been found to carry out or support IUU fishing within their own or adjacent convention areas and/or species of competence:
Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR)
Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT)
General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM)
Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC)
International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT)
Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC)
Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO)
North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC)
North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC)
South East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (SEAFO)
South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO)
Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA)
Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC)
The Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List merges all these sources into one list that provides a single reference point to identify whether a vessel is currently IUU listed. Vessels that have been IUU listed in the past and subsequently delisted (for example because of a change in ownership, or because the vessel is no longer in service) are also retained on the site, so that the site contains a full historic record of IUU listed fishing vessels.
Unlike the IUU lists published on individual RFMO websites, which may update vessel details infrequently or not at all, the Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List is kept up to date with the best available information regarding changes to vessel identity, flag state, ownership, location, and operations.

Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.
