Rockefeller Center for Public Policy and the Social Sciences, spent the fall term studying the political history of Northern Ireland and the period of violent sectarian conflict beginning in the 1970s and known as “the Troubles.”
During the break following fall term, the class traveled to London, Dublin, and Belfast, meeting with dozens of people who were involved in the conflict, in peace negotiations, or in efforts to rebuild civil society after the conflict. Over two weeks in December, the group met the former prime minister of Ireland, community activists, scholars, business leaders, British military veterans, former partisans from the Irish Republican Army and Unionist militias, and a fair number of outspoken cab drivers.
The objective of the practicum is for the group to collaborate on a policy paper that applies the lessons of the 1998 Northern Ireland peace process to other sectarian conflicts. Wheelan, a senior lecturer and policy fellow at the Rockefeller Center, required that the recommendations, directed to a hypothetical group of senior government officials, be as specific and actionable as possible.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Named Internship Profile Summary - Rebecca Rowland (Rosenwald)
1. Rebecca Rowland is an expected government and history
double major. During high school she interned for a non-
profit organization which sent medical missions to Haiti,
and her town library exhibited photographs she took on
the island. At Dartmouth she worked as a news reporter
for The Dartmouth newspaper, and spent her freshman
summer teaching English and art in Fuzhou, China. Rebecca
co-founded the Dartmouth writing publication The
Humbug, and studied at the London School of Economics
and Political Science as part of the Government
department’s foreign study program. After graduation, Rebecca hopes to participate in
humanitarian projects and attend graduate school.
Rebecca was funded by the Rockefeller Center for a Winter 2015 internship, with generous
support from the Mr. E. John Rosenwald Jr. ’52 Public Affairs Internship Fund.
Executive Summary from Rebecca’s final report:
The U.S. Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York is the office for the federal prosecutor
for Manhattan, Bronx, and various NY counties. Currently, the office is led by U.S. Attorney Preet
Bharara who oversees the office’s criminal and civil investigations. During my internship I worked in the
press office. My duties included preparing press conferences and repatriation ceremonies, researching
information on past and ongoing cases, attending court proceedings to relay the developments of
important cases, talking to reporters and answering press inquiries, as well as compiling and distributing
daily news clips. Over the course of my internship, I attended lectures and panels hosted by the U.S.
Attorney, took photos for the office at the Press Conference for the Sheldon Silver investigation,
witnessed a swearing-in ceremony for three new Assistant U.S. Attorneys, and, most valuably, gained a
level of insight into legal proceedings that most only achieve
in law school. Because of my position in the press office I was
not only exposed to a variety of cases, but was expected to
be knowledgeable of all of the office’s high profile
investigations—cases involving public corruption, terrorism,
cybercrime, money laundering, securities and commodities
fraud, to name a few.
[MR. E. JOHN ROSENWALD JR. ’52 PUBLIC AFFAIRS FUND INTERN PROFILE]
“My internship gave me
confidence that if I go to law
school, I would enjoy the work
I would do there.”
2. My internship at the U.S. Attorney’s office provided me with a window into the legal process from the
beginning of investigations to building a case, to prosecuting, to closing, and sometimes to appealing. I
also learned about media, the press, and the battle between ethical journalism and sensational news.
My position in the press office exposed me to the power of media, especially with regards to significant
cases.
My passions lie in public policy and I have an interest in attending law school in the future, but whether
that leads me to working in Government, at an advocacy organization, as a lawyer pursuing justice, or as
a journalist seeking transparency, I am unsure. I believe those various professions are inter-related and
that to succeed I will have to be competent in each. My time working at the U.S. Attorney’s Office
reinforces that belief. I worked in a federal institution. I researched policy and law. I observed the legal
process to administer justice. I interacted with reporters spreading information and transparency about
cases. My internship gave me confidence that if I go to law school, I would enjoy the work I would do
there. I am animated about law and the work that attorneys do. But my internship also exposed me to
the work of a public servant. I enjoyed the policy aspect of working at the U.S. Attorney’s Office and
would like to continue to pursue social justice. Ultimately my internship reinforced my passions and
plans for the future.
