Danielle Unterschutz interned in Congressman Luetkemeyer's office in Washington D.C. through the Rockefeller Center's summer internship program. As an intern, her responsibilities included administrative tasks like handling mail and calls from constituents, as well as conducting legislative research on issues raised by constituents from Missouri's ninth district. She also worked on correspondence and took notes at congressional briefings and hearings. The internship confirmed Danielle's interest in American politics and the federal government.

Danielle Unterschutz ‘14 is from Clark, Missouri, and attended
Sturgeon High School. In high school, she was president of
National Honor Society and served as a U.S. Senate Page. In
summer of 2009, Unterschutz worked as an intern at the
Missouri Republican Party. She is pursuing a major in
government and a minor in public policy. Here at Dartmouth,
Unterschutz is an associate editor of the Dartmouth Law
Journal and participates in America Reads. This summer, she
will be interning in Representative Luetkemeyer’s office in
Washington D.C.
Danielle was funded by The Rockefeller Center for a Summer
2011 Internship, with generous support from The Class of 1964.
Executive Summary from Danielle’s final report:
During my internship at Congressman Luetkemeyer’s DC office, my daily tasks ranged from
administrative duties to conducting legislative research. Along with other interns within the
office, I handled constituent and office mail, petitions, telephone calls, constituent tours, and
entering information into the Information Quorum database. Among my administrative duties,
I handled calls from concerned constituents from Missouri’s ninth district regarding the debt
ceiling. Research on the questions raised by constituents was another large part of my work. I
also worked on many Dear Colleague and constituent letters ranging from the use of medicinal
marijuana to the closings of several post offices within the district. Additionally, I took notes on
Congressional briefings and committee hearings on a variety of topics. My summer long-term
project was to conduct a report and editorial over the district survey over the national debt,
energy, government spending, and small business concerns.

2. district in Missouri. This internship was incredibly instructive in teaching me more about my
home state than I had ever known. Specifically, Missouri agriculture and small business was a
large focus of my internship. My internship experience has solidified my government
concentration and has helped shaped what classes I want to take during my next three years at
Dartmouth. Before I thought I knew the workings of the federal government, but this
internship has shown me that Congress’ influence stretches far beyond what I had formerly
thought.
