Stereotyping Gender in Children’s Literature
ABSTRACT: The persistent imbalance of gender representation in children’s literature has become an issue. The stereotypes and worldview embedded in children’s books have become accepted knowledge, and such deepseated socialized thinking has created barriers that prevent authors from implementing their egalitarian beliefs. This paper contends that a huge imbalance exist in the presentation of gender in children’s literature and therefore states that despite the positive attributes that typify children’s literature in Nigeria, the literature is gender biased. Gender stereotypes in children’s literature in Nigeria enhance gender inequality by imparting notions that privilege masculinity and downgrade femininity, gender bias exist in content, language, and pictures in a number of children’s literatures and reinforces the building and maintaining of biases towards the female genders. This paper analyses imbalance in gender relations in selected children’s books in Nigeria. The study found out that children’s literature in Nigeria is gender bias and displays imbalances in the representation of textual characters and as a result there exist the absence of dynamic and positive female characters in the literature produced for the younger ones.

Azar Nafasi describes the life in the Islamic Republic after the revolution and the newfound laws which arose as a result of it. She explains how the totalitarian regime has oppressed women and limited them in their everyday lives and activities driving them to hide their true identities under the required black scarves and dresses. Susan Faludi describes the Citadel as a “living museum”, whose main attempt is to preserve the same ideals and traditions as when the school was first founded and shape the boys that attend the school into men.

Both Nafasi and Faludi are exploring group behavior and identity in their works, but how does the Citadel boys’ and Tehran women’s behavior change depending on who they are around and where they are at the moment? Are their true identities suppressed at any given time and how? What does the word sanctuary mean for both the Citadel and the women in Iran? The Citadel and Nafisi’s living room seem to offer different ideas of the word sanctuary. How does Faludi understand the way the Citadel presents itself as a ‘sanctuary’ from a libertine and effeminized world? Similarly, how do the weekly meetings in the author’s living room serve as a sanctuary for the women in the literature group and why do they find the need to expose their true selves and all their colors in this sacred space? Could the Citadel be considered functioning as a totalitarian regime? If so, how are the Citadel’s “laws” similar to the laws of the Islamic Republic after the revolution regarding their behavior towards women?

ABSTRACT: The persistent imbalance of gender representation in children’s literature has become an issue. The stereotypes and worldview embedded in children’s books have become accepted knowledge, and such deepseated socialized thinking has created barriers that prevent authors from implementing their egalitarian beliefs. This paper contends that a huge imbalance exist in the presentation of gender in children’s literature and therefore states that despite the positive attributes that typify children’s literature in Nigeria, the literature is gender biased. Gender stereotypes in children’s literature in Nigeria enhance gender inequality by imparting notions that privilege masculinity and downgrade femininity, gender bias exist in content, language, and pictures in a number of children’s literatures and reinforces the building and maintaining of biases towards the female genders. This paper analyses imbalance in gender relations in selected children’s books in Nigeria. The study found out that children’s literature in Nigeria is gender bias and displays imbalances in the representation of textual characters and as a result there exist the absence of dynamic and positive female characters in the literature produced for the younger ones.
Pathways to Possibilities: Discovering Deaf Characters

Azar Nafasi describes the life in the Islamic Republic after the revolution and the newfound laws which arose as a result of it. She explains how the totalitarian regime has oppressed women and limited them in their everyday lives and activities driving them to hide their true identities under the required black scarves and dresses. Susan Faludi describes the Citadel as a “living museum”, whose main attempt is to preserve the same ideals and traditions as when the school was first founded and shape the boys that attend the school into men.

“Our world in that living room with its window framing my beloved Elburz Mountains became our sanctuary, our self-contained universe, mocking the reality of black-scarved, timid faces in the city that sprawled below” (Nafasi 419).
Both Nafasi and Faludi are exploring group behavior and identity in their works, but how does the Citadel boys’ and Tehran women’s behavior change depending on who they are around and where they are at the moment? Are their true identities suppressed at any given time and how? What does the word sanctuary mean for both the Citadel and the women in Iran? The Citadel and Nafisi’s living room seem to offer different ideas of the word sanctuary. How does Faludi understand the way the Citadel presents itself as a ‘sanctuary’ from a libertine and effeminized world? Similarly, how do the weekly meetings in the author’s living room serve as a sanctuary for the women in the literature group and why do they find the need to expose their true selves and all their colors in this sacred space? Could the Citadel be considered functioning as a totalitarian regime? If so, how are the Citadel’s “laws” similar to the laws of the Islamic Republic after the revolution regarding their behavior towards women?

Public health curricula at the high school level may be a vehicle for addressing health disparities and improving health outcomes among adolescents, particularly in socially marginalized communities. Public health curricula may address health disparities and contribute to the composition of the future health professions workforce; this is especially relevant when high school education programs are linked to career pipelines. This presentation addresses how a school course encompassed aspects of population wellness utilizing social constructionist methods of education. The course was developed adhering to a theoretical framework influenced by principles of positive youth development, critical race theory and school connectedness. This presentation also discusses lessons learned and future directions of the public health curriculum in Humboldt Park. Next steps include improving and evaluating the public health curriculum and career-linked pipeline and connecting this program with other area schools.

1) A study assessed the prevalence of diagnosed diabetes and diabetes mortality rate in a large Puerto Rican community in Chicago. 2) The prevalence of diabetes was found to be 20.8%, the highest reported for Puerto Ricans and twice as high as rates for Puerto Ricans in New York and Puerto Rico. 3) The diabetes mortality rate of 67.6 per 100,000 population was more than twice the rates for all of Chicago and the US.

CHSC 431: Community Assessment
This Spring the students of CHSC 431: Community Assessment, a graduate-level core UIC School of Public Health class engaged in a collaborative learning experience with students and faculty at Pedro Albizu Campos Puerto Rican High School to conduct a community health assessment of Humboldt Park. The UIC SPH class of nearly 40 students broke into six groups of students to assess separate health areas identified by PACHS as important - gentrification/sense of belonging; issues of LGBTQ youth, physical activity, nutrition, young women's sexual/reproductive health, and health literacy/diabetes. Each group engaged in a mixed method
assessment modeling the assessment component of the Mobilizing Action through Planning and Partnerships (MAPP) process typically carried out by local health departments. Each group had at least two members engaged in an ongoing community learning experience so as to better discern community perspectives with respect to their health topic. The learning experience ranged from to engaging/facilitating small group learning to facilitating a schoolwide survey to volunteer coaching of a youth sports club. Existing quantitative data on population demographics, health status and health behavior were analyzed in light of qualitative data from key informant interviews, participant observation or focus groups (debriefing groups) gathered from community engaged learning experience characterizing/contextualizing the health topic. Preliminary findings were discussed at Humboldt Park Library 4/21 and 4/28.

like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover

- Many young people of color in urban contexts are forced to negotiate difficult living conditions. Their ability to transform their socioeconomic conditions might be dependent on their ability to analyze and challenge social structures and to actively engage in the reconstruction of those structures. This paper will discuss how marginalized communities’ development of counter-stories (Solórzano & Yosso, 2001, 2002) plays a central role in their efforts towards social change.
