Playing is associated to pleasure and fun whereas academic learning is associated to effort and hard work. Many research has shown the benefits of introducing games in academic teaching as a way to improve learning. Curiosity is also important when learning. Indeed, when curiosity is awakened, people learn without resistance. In order to improve the learning experience, a serious game was integrated in a MOOC. The use of a serious game as a form of evaluation in a MOOC is a true innovation in education: students would play a video game where different situations were presented and they would solve problems related to the courses.
Innovating in education is certainly a challenge. Although integrating a serious game in the MOOC platform needed a considerable amount of technical effort, it was an absolute success: the completion rate was high (31%) with a great percentage of young students (49%) following the courses.

Academics working on online, blended and technology enhanced programmes and modules can oftentimes find themselves working in isolation from their teaching colleagues. Focused on providing the optimal student experience and with the usual demands on their time of a full teaching timetable they often don’t have the opportunity to look at emerging trends or technologies within their own discipline or indeed across disciplines.
A community of practice is defined by Wegner-Trayner as "a group of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do, and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly" and in establishing a TEL Community of Practice within WIT it is hoped that colleagues will have a forum to discuss, debate and discover best practice in the areas of online, blended and technology-enhanced learning. The COP will meet regularly with the focus being on community led initiatives and the sharing of and exchange of experiences.
This presentation will focus on the efforts that were taken within WIT on establishing a COP and document the journey taken so far. This has included a number of planning meetings, the publication of a number of staff newsletters, the holding of an end-of-semester showcase day: The Collective: Unexpected, together with a number of other events and activities aimed at building awareness and a sense of community. Accredited and non-accredited staff professional development activities and opportunities were also made available to staff across the institute.
Canvassing of support from Heads of School, Heads of Department and the Institute Executive led to the establishment and support of a COP becoming a key part of the newly drafted strategic plan as one of the actions aimed at improving the quality of the student learning experience.

The past few years have seen an exponential growth of the number of MOOCs worldwide. However, it is proven by the avaivalable completion rate data that motivation can quickly fade even for students who are highly motivated at the beginning of the courses. Faced with this realty, it seems crucial for the future of MOOCs to adress this motivational issue and to find ways to improve the completion rates.
IFP School launched two MOOCs – “Sustainable Mobility” and “Oil&Gas” – which saw unusally high completion rates.
In this paper we analyze the results obtained within these two MOOCs. Our goal is to identify the factors that made such completion rates possible and to understand how these key issues help to produce a succesful MOOC. By this analysis, we are able to give some tips in terms of video recording, interactive assignment design such as Serious Game or Mini-games and participant mentoring to promote motivation. Applying these tips when designing a MOOC will minimize the chance of participant withdrawal and thus lead to high completion rates.

The past years have seen the exponential growth of the number of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Many universities made the move to predominantly address positioning and students’ selection concerns. Nonetheless, the components used in a MOOC are still pretty much the same as the ones used in online education: lecture, videos, forums and quizzes.
As an application school in engineering for the energy and transportation sectors, IFP School launched its first MOOC on November 2014. In this paper, we describe how the school challenged the current practices with the design and implementation of a Serious Game over a three weeks period of the online course. This pedagogical innovation facilitates knowledge transfer through situational learning. The Serious Game allows the learners to put their knowledge into practice and to face situations they would face in the industry in their future careers.
The paper is organized in two parts. First, we review the main steps of the project: the educational objectives, the instructional design, the content development, the Serious Game usage and the learners’ qualitative feedback. For its first edition, the MOOC has a 31% retention rate on the total number of registered people, a high score considering that the average completion rate for a MOOC is around 10%. According to the MOOC survey, the majority of users considers the Serious Game to be the main positive asset of the course. In addition, partly due to the Serious Game implementation, 49% of the registered people are students under 25 year olds considering that in France, the average for other MOOCs is between 15 and 19%. In a second part, we discuss the characteristics of the Serious Game as it has been implemented in the IFP School MOOC. In particular, we use typological studies on gamification and also multimedia learning to understand if all or part of the components are exclusively related Serious Games theories and principles. Finally, we conclude with the interest of gamification in an application school like IFP School.

ePCoP Assembly Report
The workshop brought together over 30 practitioners from 10 projects using eportfolios to support work-based learners. Presentations showed how institutions have implemented eportfolios for work-based training, professional development, accreditation of prior learning, and to improve retention and attainment. Tools like PebblePad and Expo were used to structure learning activities, encourage reflection, and assess students. While implementation faced challenges, projects found eportfolios addressed original issues and added benefits like improved skills and recruitment. The event shared lessons learned and highlighted the role of communities in promoting eportfolio use for work-based learning.

As universities become increasingly reliant on the online delivery of courses for distance education, those students without access to the Internet are increasingly marginalised. Among those most marginalised are incarcerated students who are often from low socio-economic status backgrounds and have limited access
to resources. This article reports on four projects that incrementally build on each other, three of which are
completed, at the University of Southern Queensland that seek to provide access to higher education for incarcerated students. These projects developed a modified version of Moodle, called Stand Alone Moodle (SAM), which doesn’t require Internet access, but provides the same level of access and interactivity as regular Moodle. EBook readers were also used in two of the projects. A description of the projects, a summary of the results and issues is provided. The projects will be extended to deploy Stand Alone Moodle and tablet computers to correctional centres across Australia with a focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

This project implemented nine school repositories and one university-wide learning repository integrated within the university's virtual learning environment to support sharing and reuse of learning resources. The project aimed to increase deposit and usage of resources through establishing workflows for content creation and resource sharing. Key outcomes included developing a metadata schema and selection criteria for learning objects, as well as increasing strategic focus on repository provision as reflected in university policies and strategies. The project successfully implemented the technical infrastructure but did not develop an interface between the learning repository and institutional repository as originally planned.
FORGE: Enhancing eLearning and research in ICT through remote experimentation
EDUCON'14 Conference: This paper presents the FORGE initiative, which aims to transform the FIRE testbed facilities, already vital for European research, into a learning resource for higher education.
From an educational perspective this project aims at promoting the notion of \ac{srl} through the use of a federation of high-performance testbeds and at building unique learning paths based on the integration of a rich linked-data ontology.
Through FORGE, traditional online courses will be complemented with interactive laboratory courses.
It will also allow educators to efficiently create, use and re-use FIRE-based learning experiences through our tools and techniques. And, most importantly, FORGE will enable equity of access to the latest ICT systems and tools independent of location and at low cost, strengthening the culture of online experimentation tools and remote facilities.

Open educational resources (OER): why they matter
OER refers to open educational resources which include full courses, course materials, and other learning content that can be freely accessed and used online. MIT's OpenCourseWare initiative is an example of an institutional OER program that makes course materials from over 1,900 courses freely available on the web. Educators use OER in a variety of ways like reusing content, adapting course syllabi, and combining OER materials with other resources. There are benefits to creating OER like lowering costs for students and fostering pedagogical innovation through customizable learning materials.

OCW provides free access to educational resources and increases TU Delft's international reputation and visibility. Going forward, TU Delft sees OCW playing a role in blended learning programs and knowledge sharing with other universities and developing countries. TU Delft has chosen to focus on quality over quantity by aligning OCW with research initiatives and creating online communities around courses.
Open Educational Resources in Aquaculture Education and Training

The John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University conducted a study to find an open-source learning management system to support their online distance learning program. They implemented several LMS's and found eFront to be the best option due to its low cost and ease of use. eFront provided the functionality needed like content management, assessments, and scheduling without technical complexity. It was chosen to help the university deliver online courses globally and provide tools for instructors and students to collaborate both in and out of the classroom.
