Nurses Role In Adolesence Period
Counsellor
• Puberty changes: Maturation of sexual characteristics
• Menstrual cycle: Hormonal action in the menstruation cycle,
physiological changes during the menstruation period.
• Regarding the menstrual care changing of the pad
• Perineal care during menstruation. action taken for prevention of infection
such as hygienic measures

• Give nursing measures according to the minor disorders
• Specified care should give to the mothers who are having the
risk of pregnancy.
Clinician
• Assess the antenatal mothers during admission. Expected
date of delivery
• Deriving history collection and physical examination from the
mothers.
• Maintain adequate antenatal record including vital signs,
fundal height, sugar testing etc in each of the antenatal visits
• Antenatal examination (abdominal and vaginal examination).
• Give proper care during the case of risk pregnancy.

• Assisting pregnant mothers about the general information
regarding pregnancy labor and the childbirth.

• Antenatal care: Personal hygiene, rest, clothing, employment, travel, physical
activity, sexual intercourse, dental care, diet etc.
• Educate the importance and essentials of nutrition and exercises during the
antenatal period.
• Knowledge giving regarding the warning signs of the labor
• Childbirth education and parenthood education.
• Educate regarding the physiological changes during the pregnancy, minor
disorders and coping with the discomforts during the pregnancy, emotional
response in the pregnancy
Counsellor
• Provide counsel for emotional tension related to problem.
• Sexual relation with partner
• Changes in selfimage
• Nutritional counselling
Advocator
Nurse has to support the antenatal mothers during all procedures and inform
the mother about the benefits and harm.
Communicator
• Nurse midwife act as a communicator in the antenatal period.
• She is the link between the couple and the doctor.
• She also communicates with the expectant mother regarding various
aspects of motherhood.

• According to Benner 1984 the following 5 levels can be identified.
• NOVINCE : They are the beginners having no experiences with the care of
the woman in labor.
• ADVANCED BEGINNER: Once students have had some actual experiences
with clients under the guidance of instruction and perception they can begin
to synthesis clinical findings.
• COMPETENT NURSES: Nurse who had a few years of full time nursing on a
busy labor
• PROFICIENT NURSE: Nurse with many years of experiences are able to
select the key components.
• EXPERT NURSE: As one who" with an enormous background of
experiences.
Nurse Midwife Role In The Intranatal Period
• Caregiver
• Case manager
• Teacher
• Clinician
• Researcher
• Client advocate
• Change agent
• Communicator
Caregiver
• Nurse have to promote comfort measures and provide proper care during
the labor.
• Proper positioning of the mother
• Give medications according to the physician order
• Assessing the fetal wellbeing in the intranatal period by using the fetal
monitor machines accurately
• Adequate intranatal care such as assessment, enema giving, bladder
care, skin preparation etc with the knowledge of the mother
• Prepare the mother for the labor and provide adequate psychological
support for the mother.
• Provide the environment which is safe for the delivery of the fetus
• Proper newborn care.
Case manager
• Nurse has the role of providing treatment for the mothers such as
labor conduction, monitoring the labor.
• In any risk labor adequate referral services as per the physician order
• The nurse will give the expert nursing measures in a professional way.
Teacher
• Teaches regarding the normal physiology of the labor and changes in the labor.
• Teaches regarding the pain measures to be taken during the contraction time.
• Teaches regarding the position and pushing effort of mother during the labor.
• Regarding the importance of the breast feeding and the kangaroo care for the
newborn baby.
• Teaches regarding the father and the parent's role.
Clinician
• Assess the maternal and fetal well being by using proper nursing measures
such as the review of the data, examination and reports.
• Monitor the mother and record each and every action in the partograph.
• Promote the measures necessary for the child birth.
• Documentation during the intranatal period.
• Proper communication between the family members and the physician.
Researcher
• During the intranatal period nurse can do research studies in order to
improve the nursing measures during the intranatal period.
Client Advocate
• In the intranatal period the nurse makes the mother regarding their
decision in the complicated labor, risk fetus.
Change Agent
She will provide all nursing measures approximately in the environment and the
mothers to gain an effective care or improved care.
Communicator
Nurse conveys the information regarding the birth of the child. She also
informs the family members regarding the immediate requirements after the
birth of the child
Protector
Nurse helps to maintain a safe environment for the mother and
the newborn to protect them from possible adverse effect of the
treatment.

Clinician
• Initiating a breast feeding and the new born care.
• Provide new born assessment and postnatal assessment
• Identifying any risk in the postnatal period
• Developing discharge planning and make teaching regarding the postnatal
care such as the exercise, diet, feeding, hygiene, follow up, immunization.
Counselor
• Family planning
• Spacing of the pregnancy, temporary and permanent methods.
• Care of the newborn
• Immunization of the newborn
Teacher
• Importance of personal hygiene and perineal hygiene in prevention of
the infection in the episiotomy wound.
• Importance of the breast feeding.
• Essential newborn care
• Early ambulation and the postnatal exercises
• Importance of the nutrition
• Teaching regarding the IUD cares for the spacing mothers.
Care Giver
The nurse has to provide the care,
• Post natal overall care
• Assess the wound healing
• Identify minor disorder and provide adequate nursing measures
• Evaluate the progress of the client
• Provide emotional support to the mothers
Preventer of Illness
• The primary focus of nurse is preventing of illness
• The nurse practices disease prevention in such a way by conducting
antenatal, postnatal clinics for identification of any risks and
promoting the health.
Conclusion
• Nurse has to perform her different and
varied roles during different phases of
childbearing. These roles will gain
through her full experiences and this
will helps her to provide better care for
the mothers.
