• Antenatal care refers to the care of a woman during pregnancy. The purposes
are as follows;
• ANC provides an essential link between women and the health system and
offers essential health care services.
• ANC promotes and maintains physical and mental health as well as social
wellbeing of mother and baby by providing information and education to the
pregnant woman on nutrition, sleep, personal hygiene, family planning, birth
preparedness and complication readiness.
• ANC also detects and manages high risk conditions arising during pregnancy
such as anaemia, pre eclampsia,etc.

launcher in 1987 to ensure women go through pregnancy
and child birth safely and give birth to healthy children.
• It was reinforced by maternal mortality reduction in
millennium development goals of 2000_15.
