4. PURPOSE OF ANTENATAL CARE
• INTRODUCTION
• Antenatal care refers to the care of a woman during pregnancy. The purposes
are as follows;
• ANC provides an essential link between women and the health system and
offers essential health care services.
• ANC promotes and maintains physical and mental health as well as social
wellbeing of mother and baby by providing information and education to the
pregnant woman on nutrition, sleep, personal hygiene, family planning, birth
preparedness and complication readiness.
• ANC also detects and manages high risk conditions arising during pregnancy
such as anaemia, pre eclampsia,etc.

• To ensure safe delivery of a full term healthy baby with
minimal stress and injury to the mother and baby.
• to help prepare mother physically and psychologically and
socially to bre breastfeed successfully, experience normal
pueperium and to take good care of the baby.
• To ensure good health in every pregnant woman and her
unborn child by checking for any conditions that may cause
risk either during pregnancy or at birth

6. ROLE OF ANC IN RELATION TO SAFE MOTHERHOOD
INITIATIVES.
• INTRODUCTION
• Safe motherhood is an initiative of the United nations
launcher in 1987 to ensure women go through pregnancy
and child birth safely and give birth to healthy children.
• It was reinforced by maternal mortality reduction in
millennium development goals of 2000_15.
• safe motherhood is concerned with maintaining the health
of the woman and her newborn throughout preconception,
pregnancy, childbirth and post delivery period.

7. ROLES
• ANC is the cornerstone of safe motherhood initiatives. The
following below are the roles of ANC in relation to safe motherhood
initiatives:-
• ANC programs through promoting the benefits of ANC checkups
and making them accessible promotes safe motherhood initiatives'
aim for women to access early and regular checkups.
• ANC visits allow health care providers to monitor pregnancy and
identify potential risks early thereby enabling early intervention
and management of complications leading to better birth outcomes
for both mother and baby

8. ROLES
• Since safe motherhood initiatives advocate for deliveries at health
care facilities with skilled birth attendants, ANC providers can
educate mothers on the advantages of facility based births and
dispel misconceptions about traditional birthing practices.
• ANC helps to identify and address health issues like anaemia,
preeclampsia that can lead lead to complications during childbirth
so early intervention can significantly reduce mortality rates
promoting safe motherhood initiatives.
• ANC provides platform for educating mothers on various aspects of
pregnancy like nutrition, birth preparedness, danger signs thereby
empowering them to make informed decisions about their health
and their baby's wellbeing.

social support and mental health services.

• Monitor and promote physical, mental and social well being of the mother and child.
• Detect and manage any other health conditions or complications that arise during pregnancy
• Provide counselling on important topic such as nutrition, birth preparedness, and family
planning.
• Offer support and information about pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal period
