ENVIRONMENTALIMPACT ASSESSMENT
A tool for evaluating the environmental impact of a project or
construction in terms of vegetation, geology, climate, energy,
pollution, historical and indigenous importance (if
applicable), and social and economic changes. (Jagannath,
2019)
An EIA focuses on the project's effect on endangered plant
and animal species, human health, and current policies,
regulatory situations, and potential planning needs.
The objective of EIA is :
i. To identify, predict and evaluate the economic, environmental and
social impact of development activities
ii. To provide information on the environmental consequences for
decision making and
iii. To promote environmentally sound and sustainable development
through the identification of appropriate alternatives and mitigation
measures. (Jagannath, 2019)
●
OBJECTIVES OF THE EIA
Biodiversity conservation means preserving natural environments and their
diverse habitats, as well as plants, populations, chromosomes, and the dynamic
relationships that exist between them.
Biodiversity conservation refers to the preservation and maintenance of biological
diversity in order to secure funding for long-term development. (GDPR, 2021).
The conservation of biodiversity has three major goals:
● To ensure the species diversity is preserved.
● Species and ecosystems should be used in a sustainable way.
● To keep vital ecosystem mechanisms and life-supporting structures running
Biodiversity Conservation
Biodiversity should be included in EIAs because biodiversity
conservation is a key component of sustainable
development.
It should also be considered because considering
biodiversity impacts during project development will help
ensure project long-term sustainability.
To ensure that the environmental implications of the policy
and regulations, which are expected to have major negative
effects on biological diversity, are properly considered.
Why Consider Biodiversity in EIA
Why Consider Biodiversity in EIA
Biodiversity is applicable to all forms of impact assessments and should be
discussed at all stages, from individual project environmental impact
assessments (EIA) to policy, strategy, and program strategic environmental
assessments (SEA).
Its value should be included in social impact assessments, however health
impact assessments may need to take into account. The importance of
biodiversity in disease transmission or biological regulation.
Finally, biodiversity produces commodities for foreign commerce, and should
be investigated as part of a trade impact assessment (sometimes referred to
as sustainability impact assessment).
Why Consider Biodiversity in EIA
● Habitat loss and degradation,
● Habitat fragmentation,
● Loss of species,
● Natural environmental processes,
● Direct impacts,
● Alien invasive organisms,
● Pollution effects provide detailed information on conservation
priorities and on types and conservation status of ecosystems.
● Describe trends and threats at the ecosystem as well as species level
and provide an overview of planned conservation activities
CRITERIA FOREIA
The nature of the impact.
The sort of impact on the impacted area is assessed.
The magnitude of the effect :
● Place-Specific: The scope of the project is limited to the site and its immediate surroundings.
● At the regional level, if a bird or mammal habitat is lost, the species will leave the area or become
extinct.
● Impact on a national scale - if an ecosystem or species of national significance is affected impact
across international borders
Duration of impact
● short term (0-5 years )
● medium term ( 5-15 years)
● long term ( 15- 30 years ) due to natural process or by human intervention
Discontinues : Impact only occur during specific climatic conditions or during a particular time of year
CRITERIA FOREIA
Intensity
● Low impact : effect on environment in such a way that natural, soil & cultural process are not affected
● Average or Medium Impact
● High Impact : Natural, cultural or soil process are altered to the extent that they will temporarily or
permanently cease
Probability of occurrence
● low probability
● Average probability
● High probability
definite : Impact will occur regardless of any prevention measures
Determination of significance
● No Significance : The impacts do not influence the environment in any way
● Low Significance : The impacts will have a minor influence on the environment require alternative
mitigations
● High Significance : The impacts will have a major influence on the environment. Influence decision,
regardless of any possible mitigation
Different stages of EIA to Conserve
Biodiversity
Screening: to determine which projects or developments require a full
or partial impact assessment study
● Legal requirements for EIA may not guarantee that biodiversity will
be taken into account, consideration should be given to
incorporating biodiversity criteria into existing screening criteria
● Screening criteria can be found in national biodiversity strategies
and action plans (NBSAPs) because they provide detailed
information on conservation priorities
● To facilitate the development of screening criteria, the three levels
of diversity are important
Biodiversity geographical screening criteria
● Protected areas: defined as areas in which no human intervention is allowed, or as areas where EIA is
required
● Threatened ecosystems areas: where certain activities would always require an EIA habitat for
threatened species: always require an EIA at an appropriate level of detail.
● Areas with other relevant ecosystem services: such as flood storage areas, groundwater recharge
areas, catchment areas, areas with valued landscape quality the need for impact assessment
● All other areas: no EIS is required from a biodiversity perspective maybe for other reasons.

  • 3. ENVIRONMENTALIMPACT ASSESSMENT A tool for evaluating the environmental impact of a project or construction in terms of vegetation, geology, climate, energy, pollution, historical and indigenous importance (if applicable), and social and economic changes. (Jagannath, 2019) An EIA focuses on the project's effect on endangered plant and animal species, human health, and current policies, regulatory situations, and potential planning needs.
  • 4. The objective of EIA is : i. To identify, predict and evaluate the economic, environmental and social impact of development activities ii. To provide information on the environmental consequences for decision making and iii. To promote environmentally sound and sustainable development through the identification of appropriate alternatives and mitigation measures. (Jagannath, 2019) ● OBJECTIVES OF THE EIA
  • 5. Biodiversity conservation means preserving natural environments and their diverse habitats, as well as plants, populations, chromosomes, and the dynamic relationships that exist between them. Biodiversity conservation refers to the preservation and maintenance of biological diversity in order to secure funding for long-term development. (GDPR, 2021). The conservation of biodiversity has three major goals: ● To ensure the species diversity is preserved. ● Species and ecosystems should be used in a sustainable way. ● To keep vital ecosystem mechanisms and life-supporting structures running Biodiversity Conservation
  • 6. Biodiversity should be included in EIAs because biodiversity conservation is a key component of sustainable development. It should also be considered because considering biodiversity impacts during project development will help ensure project long-term sustainability. To ensure that the environmental implications of the policy and regulations, which are expected to have major negative effects on biological diversity, are properly considered. Why Consider Biodiversity in EIA
  • 7. Why Consider Biodiversity in EIA Biodiversity is applicable to all forms of impact assessments and should be discussed at all stages, from individual project environmental impact assessments (EIA) to policy, strategy, and program strategic environmental assessments (SEA). Its value should be included in social impact assessments, however health impact assessments may need to take into account. The importance of biodiversity in disease transmission or biological regulation. Finally, biodiversity produces commodities for foreign commerce, and should be investigated as part of a trade impact assessment (sometimes referred to as sustainability impact assessment).
  • 8. Why Consider Biodiversity in EIA ● Habitat loss and degradation, ● Habitat fragmentation, ● Loss of species, ● Natural environmental processes, ● Direct impacts, ● Alien invasive organisms, ● Pollution effects provide detailed information on conservation priorities and on types and conservation status of ecosystems. ● Describe trends and threats at the ecosystem as well as species level and provide an overview of planned conservation activities
  • 9. CRITERIA FOREIA The nature of the impact. The sort of impact on the impacted area is assessed. The magnitude of the effect : ● Place-Specific: The scope of the project is limited to the site and its immediate surroundings. ● At the regional level, if a bird or mammal habitat is lost, the species will leave the area or become extinct. ● Impact on a national scale - if an ecosystem or species of national significance is affected impact across international borders Duration of impact ● short term (0-5 years ) ● medium term ( 5-15 years) ● long term ( 15- 30 years ) due to natural process or by human intervention Discontinues : Impact only occur during specific climatic conditions or during a particular time of year
  • 10. CRITERIA FOREIA Intensity ● Low impact : effect on environment in such a way that natural, soil & cultural process are not affected ● Average or Medium Impact ● High Impact : Natural, cultural or soil process are altered to the extent that they will temporarily or permanently cease Probability of occurrence ● low probability ● Average probability ● High probability definite : Impact will occur regardless of any prevention measures Determination of significance ● No Significance : The impacts do not influence the environment in any way ● Low Significance : The impacts will have a minor influence on the environment require alternative mitigations ● High Significance : The impacts will have a major influence on the environment. Influence decision, regardless of any possible mitigation
  • 11. Different stages of EIA to Conserve Biodiversity Screening: to determine which projects or developments require a full or partial impact assessment study ● Legal requirements for EIA may not guarantee that biodiversity will be taken into account, consideration should be given to incorporating biodiversity criteria into existing screening criteria ● Screening criteria can be found in national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) because they provide detailed information on conservation priorities ● To facilitate the development of screening criteria, the three levels of diversity are important
  • 12. Biodiversity geographical screening criteria ● Protected areas: defined as areas in which no human intervention is allowed, or as areas where EIA is required ● Threatened ecosystems areas: where certain activities would always require an EIA habitat for threatened species: always require an EIA at an appropriate level of detail. ● Areas with other relevant ecosystem services: such as flood storage areas, groundwater recharge areas, catchment areas, areas with valued landscape quality the need for impact assessment ● All other areas: no EIS is required from a biodiversity perspective maybe for other reasons.
