RELEVANT EXPERIENCE
Network Engineer: full time at IPcomplete from October 2014 to September 2015.
Overview – working within a small team of 3 Engineers in a variety of roles to
provide support for customers and for installations. These were collaboration
systems both on-site and to our data centre.
Duties – Meeting SLA targets on fixing problems, change requests, installations,
maintenance, monitoring and security.
Achievement – Setting up a monitoring system using Cacti which is open source
and runs on a Linux server. The system showed all routers, switches and servers
and sent out email alerts to all engineers if something went into a down state.
This proved extremely useful in itself however the statistics pulled off from each
system using SNMP were even more valuable allowing for much more effective
troubleshooting based on the hardware statistics and interface statistics.
2. Achievement – Successfully diagnosing a software based crash on a critical
2901 router for one of our customers before we had our monitoring platform in
place. This involved a lot of investigation and research over the course of half a
day (the router was running at this point) which I had to conduct on my own
without any support. It turned out to be a problem with the buffers being
overloaded which had caused memory leaks, this then resulted in the system
memory being overloaded and eventually causing the system to crash due to no
memory being free. The solution was to increase the buffer size to prevent
memory leaks, I also recommended buying another 2901 to cope with the
increasing volume of traffic.
Network Engineer: 3 month contract at Hutchinson Networks – June 2014 to August 2014
Overview – Primarily I worked as 1st tier support for Engineers upgrading and
replacing on-site network equipment in racks (2-5 racks total).
Duties – Resolve any misconfigurations or incorrect installations, ensure
documentation filled out at each stage of upgrade, liaise with management if any
problems arise.
Achievement – Successfully supporting 4 installations at the same time when
normally you only support 1 or 2. This of course was not planned but I worked
extremely hard in order to make all issues were resolved and everything was
completed to standard.
Technical Support: Voluntary, part time at Samye Ling from 2010 – 2013
Overview - Technical support for users, network (35 nodes and 2 servers) and
general computing issues.
Achievement - Successfully determined CPU failure of primary server and re-
configured secondary server to act as primary until first server was fixed.
Achievement - Created a library database for Tibetan scripts and added functionality
of bar codes to manage scripts and their locations electronically.
Honours Student: 4th year at Napier University from 2012 - 2013
Overview - An innovative study into addressing schemes for Mobile Ad Hoc
Networks. Currently an ongoing field of development.
Achievement – I have made a contribution to a very limited amount documentation
surrounding the subject and proposed a design to overcome the unique challenges
faced for addressing in this field of networking.
ADDITIONAL EXPERINCE
Gardener:2008 to 2010
Overview - Assistant head gardener in general gardening tasks, building
infrastructure and coordination of volunteers and customers on courses.
Achievement – Offer to work for the head gardener at any time. We worked
together very well and is where I developed my good working ethic.
