acknowledgments
It takes a village to raise a recital! I would not be able to sing
tonight if it was not for the talent, time, energy and work of
many others who have supported me.
Special thanks to my parents, Bob and Susan Steele,
who flew across the country to help out at home, to
Roger and Joan Tessier, for their constant help with
my day-to-day logistics, and to John for inspiring me to
believe I can do it all.
Thank you to Oliver Munar, for his insight, initiative and
vision in the creation of the posters, programmes, and
projections.
Shannon and Chris, I am so grateful to you for making
this project come to fruition.  It has been a joy to
collaborate with you!

Liebesbotschaft by Franz Schubert, text by Ludwig Rellstab
Rauschendes Bächlein, so silbern und hell,
Eilst zur Geliebten so munter und schnell?
Ach, trautes Bächlein,mein Bote sei du;
Bringe die Grüße des Fernen ihr zu.
All’ ihre Blumen, im Garten gepflegt,
Die sie so lieblich am Busen trägt,
Und ihre Rosen in purpurner Glut,
Bächlein, erquicke mit kühlender Flut.
Wenn sie am Ufer, in Träume versenkt,
Meiner gedenkend, das Köpfchen hängt;
Tröste die Süße mit freundlichem Blick,
Denn der Geliebte kehrt bald zurück.
Neigt sich die Sonne mit röthlichem Schein,
Wiege das Liebchen in Schlummer ein.
Rausche sie murmelnd in süße Ruh,
Flüstre ihr Träume der Liebe zu.
Dass sie hier gewesen by Franz Schubert, text by Friedrich Rückert
Daß der Ostwind Düfte
Hauchet in die Lüfte,
Dadurch tut er kund,
Daß du hier gewesen.
Daß hier Tränen rinnen,
Dadurch wirst du innen,
Wär’s dir sonst nicht kund,
Daß ich hier gewesen.
Schönheit oder Liebe,
Ob versteckt sie bliebe,
Düfte tun es und Tränen kund,
Daß sie hier gewesen.
Suleika I by Franz Schubert, text by Marianne von Willemer
Was bedeutet die Bewegung?
Bringt der Ost mir frohe Kunde?
Seiner Schwingen frische Regung
Kühlt des Herzens tiefe Wunde.
Kosend spielt er mit dem Staube,
Jagt ihn auf in leichten Wölkchen,
Treibt zur sichern Rebenlaube
Der Insekten frohes Völkchen.
Murmuring brooklet, so silver and bright,
Do you haste to my love so merry and fast?
Ah, dear brooklet, my messenger be;
carry her greetings from one far away.
All her cherished flowers in the garden,
those she so sweetly wears at ther breast
and her roses in their crimson glow,
refresh, brooklet, with your cooling waters
When she, at your side, lost in dreams,
thinking of me, hangs low her head,
consoles my sweet with a kindly look,
for soon shall her beloved return.
When the sun sinks in a reddish gleam,
rock my sweetheart into a slumber.
murmur her into sweet repose,
whisper her dreams of love.
The easterly wind,
scenting the air,
thereby makes known
that you were here!
The tears that here flow,
through them will you know-
if not yet aware-
that I was here!
Beauty or love,
though hidden remaining,
scents make known, and tears,
that she was here!
What does this stirring mean?
Is it glad news the East Wind brings?
The fresh stirring of its wings
cools the deep wound of the heart.
Fondly it toys with the dust,
flings it up in small light clouds,
chases to the safe vine-bower
the tiny merry insect throng.
Suleika I (continued)
Lindert sanft der Sonne Glühen,
Kühlt auch mir die heißen Wangen,
Küßt die Reben noch im Fliehen,
Die auf Feld und Hügel prangen.
Und mir bringt sein leises Flüstern
Von dem Freunde tausend Grüße;
Eh’ noch diese Hügel düstern,
Grüßen mich wohl tausend Küsse.
Und so kannst du weiter ziehen!
Diene Freunden und Betrübten.
Dort wo hohe Mauern glühen,
Dort find’ ich bald den Vielgeliebten.
Ach, die wahre Herzenskunde,
Liebeshauch, erfrischtes Leben
Wird mir nur aus seinem Munde,
Kann mir nur sein Athem geben.
Suleika II by Franz Schubert, text by Marianne von Willemer
Ach, um deine feuchten Schwingen,
West, wie sehr ich dich beneide:
Denn du kannst ihm Kunde bringen
Was ich in der Trennung leide!
Die Bewegung deiner Flügel
Weckt im Busen stilles Sehnen;
Blumen, Auen, Wald und Hügel
Stehn bei deinem Hauch in Tränen.
Doch dein mildes sanftes Wehen
Kühlt die wunden Augenlider;
Ach, für Leid müßt’ ich vergehen,
Hofft’ ich nicht zu sehn ihn wieder.
Eile denn zu meinem Lieben,
Spreche sanft zu seinem Herzen;
Doch vermeid’ ihn zu betrüben
Und verbirg ihm meine Schmerzen.
Sag’ ihm, aber sag’s bescheiden:
Seine Liebe sei mein Leben,
Freudiges Gefühl von beiden
Wird mir seine Nähe geben.
Cher Pierre que je ne reverrai plus ici... by Isabelle Aboulker, text by Marie Curie
Translation will be projected
Soothes the burning of the sun,
cools as well my ardent cheeks,
kisses, in its flight, the vine
resplendent upon hill and field.
And its whispering brings me
a thousand greetings from my love;
and before these hills grow dark
a thousand kisses will surely greet me.
Ah, so can you go on your way!
serve friends, and those afflicted.
There, where lofty walls are burning,
soon I’ll find my beloved.
Ah, the true message of the heart,
love exhaled, life refreshed,
comes to me only from his mouth,
only his breath can give to me.
Ah, of your moist wings,
West Wind, how envious I am:
for to him you can bring news
of what I suffer in separation!
The beating of your wings
wakes silent longing in the breast;
flowers, eyes, forest, hill
are tearful where you breathe.
Yet your mild gentle wafting
is cooling to sore eyelids;
ah, for grief would I have to die,
did I not hope to see him again.
Speed then to my beloved,
speak softly to his heart;
but avoid troubling him,
and conceal from him my agony.
Tell him -- but put it simply --
that his love is my life,
and that the joyous feelings of both
will his presence give me.

Suleika I by Franz Schubert, text by Marianne von Willemer Was bedeutet die Bewegung? Murmuring brooklet, so silver and bright, Do you haste to my love so merry and fast? Ah, dear brooklet, my messenger be; carry her greetings from one far away. All her cherished flowers in the garden, those she so sweetly wears at ther breast and her roses in their crimson glow, refresh, brooklet, with your cooling waters When she, at your side, lost in dreams, thinking of me, hangs low her head, consoles my sweet with a kindly look, for soon shall her beloved return. When the sun sinks in a reddish gleam, rock my sweetheart into a slumber. murmur her into sweet repose, whisper her dreams of love. The easterly wind, scenting the air, thereby makes known that you were here! The tears that here flow, through them will you know- if not yet aware- that I was here! Beauty or love, though hidden remaining, scents make known, and tears, that she was here! What does this stirring mean? Is it glad news the East Wind brings? The fresh stirring of its wings cools the deep wound of the heart. Fondly it toys with the dust, flings it up in small light clouds, chases to the safe vine-bower the tiny merry insect throng.
Cher Pierre que je ne reverrai plus ici... by Isabelle Aboulker, text by Marie Curie Translation will be projected Soothes the burning of the sun, cools as well my ardent cheeks, kisses, in its flight, the vine resplendent upon hill and field. And its whispering brings me a thousand greetings from my love; and before these hills grow dark a thousand kisses will surely greet me. Ah, so can you go on your way! serve friends, and those afflicted. There, where lofty walls are burning, soon I’ll find my beloved. Ah, the true message of the heart, love exhaled, life refreshed, comes to me only from his mouth, only his breath can give to me. Ah, of your moist wings, West Wind, how envious I am: for to him you can bring news of what I suffer in separation! The beating of your wings wakes silent longing in the breast; flowers, eyes, forest, hill are tearful where you breathe. Yet your mild gentle wafting is cooling to sore eyelids; ah, for grief would I have to die, did I not hope to see him again. Speed then to my beloved, speak softly to his heart; but avoid troubling him, and conceal from him my agony. Tell him -- but put it simply -- that his love is my life, and that the joyous feelings of both will his presence give me.
