Vision Zero is our vision that nobody should be
killed or seriously injured in traffic.
Vision Zero is both an ethical approach and a
strategy to shape the safe road where nobody
is killed or seriously injured.
It assumes that roads, streets and vehicles are
more responsive to human needs, while people
follow traffic rules.
5. The goal is achieved through a long-term, efficient and systematic traffic safety
work. It is essential that the key players involved and cooperate in the work.

Work together towards Vision Zero is based on all players interact by:
โข exchange knowledge
โข coordinate our activities in road safety
โข work in a structured and systematic way.
Each player has the responsibility to plan and implement measures in its
own operations.
The design will support Vision Zero - impossible to make the dramatic
errors - enables to get it right.
Accidents may occur but no one shall die for a mistake.

There are other positive effects. Fatalities involving pedestrians in Sweden have fallen by almost 50% in the last five years. The number of children killed in traffic accidents has also been decreased. In 2008 ten months went by before there was a fatal road accident involving a child. As tragic as this is, it is a huge improvement. However there is still so much more we can do to improve road safety. In Sweden, we could cut the death toll by a further 90% if we could eliminate technical system failures, failure to wear seat belts, speeding and drink driving โ from 5 deaths per 100,000 to 0.5. This is what the Vision Zero is about: looking forward and creating strategies to take safety to new levels.
