There was once a time in product development where waterfalls ruled but today smart teams and companies are shifting their approaches to be more nimble and iterative. As they adopt approaches like Agile and Lean Startup many are also realizing that design matters. It’s not just what a product looks like but rather the entire experience that differentiates between good and great products. And they’re all looking for a UX unicorn to help them.
With some real-world examples, I’ll share with you:

Speed Design Studio is a variant of Will Evan’s Design Studio Process and was designed collaboratively by Jabe Bloom and Will Evan’s at TLCLabs
Speed Design Studio was modified from the original based on insights from Cognitive Edge methods and is focused on extremely rapid iterations in an attempt to emerge team level understandings of design problems and solution language.
Due to efforts applied to tighten cycle times, Speed Design Studio can be taught in a 1-2 hr workshop.
A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to deliver a talk at Shift in Split, Croatia.
Shift is a developer conference, so initially, I thought it would be entertaining to talk about what it’s like to work with an engineer, from a designers perspective. The working title of the talk was Things Engineers Hate About Working With (Me) a Designer.
I was going to share the mistakes I’ve made, and learned from, along the way. A manifesto of what not to do when working with an engineer. However, feedback included phrases like “it’s a bit tongue & cheek” and the best talks are ones that are “raw, honest and vulnerable.”
You don’t write code, but you’ve been successful in spite of it. The lines are blurring between design & engineering. Why not talk about how tools have helped bridge that gap?
There was something more interesting to talk about. I realized that I didn’t write code because I didn’t need to. For years I’d been spoiled, and to some extent enabled, by a handful of incredibly talented iOS engineers. The realization didn’t sit well with me.
I scrapped everything and went back to the drawing board.
Tools were my first introduction to a hobby that turned into a passion that has become an obsession
They have been steadily influencing and shaping me as a designer from the first time I sat in front of a computer in elementary school. I would not realize how much they’d impact my life until much much later.

Words matter. Verbally telling compelling stories is one of the
oldest and best ways to communicate your ideas quickly.
If you become proficient at this method and convey enough
detail, someone else will actually be able to convey it in many
other mediums just as you conceived.

comes to filling space.
There’s nothing easier to capture the potential environment for
an experience than taking your phone out and taking a photo.

Ordinarily, there’s nothing faster than picking up a pen or
pencil and drawing your ideas out quickly on paper.
Unfortunately, it’s not that easy when dealing with 3D.
Other tools and techniques are actually better than the
traditionally fastest and easiest method.

You can argue that videos are now the most popular way to
communicate anything these days.
Using some new tools can make it simple to create videos that
have holograms in them that illustrate ideas for experiences.

Of all the techniques and tools for creating breakthrough
experiences, it turns out that acting is the most effective.
Walking through the experience with props and other people
playing the role of hologram reveals so much about how it
should feel and behave, nothing comes close.
This is also referred to as “bodystorming” (like brainstorming)

It’s everyone’s first thought to jump right into 3D modeling and
animation tools to prototype their experiences. Good idea :-)
The nature of what we’re doing requires some dimensionality
in the way we depict it. These tools bring the ideas to life,
