More and more backpack shoppers are trying to answer questions about products through online
research. Whereas, in the past, purchasing outdoor activity equipment that had stringent fit
requirements was largely an in-store endeavor.
Lately, consumers had expressed in increased desire for the convenience of online research and
shopping for outdoor activity equipment, but their focus on stringent fit requirements has not
decreased.
Problem: they want to shop/purchase online, but how a backpack product fits on an individual's
body is a critical component of the perceived quality of ownership experience

How might we simulate an in-person, try-on experience online for
shoppers looking to know how a backpack will sit on their body.

Start grouping ideas into categories.
Don’t worry if the categories aren’t
immediately apparent. Look for
overlaps or duplicates to get started.
Name each theme

Each team member gets 4 dots.
The decider will vote with 2 dots.
It’s ok to vote on your own.
It’s ok to put more than one dot on the

We’ll pay more attention to notes that have
multiple votes, so think strategically
We are not trying to get to one direction at
this point in time

Fold your paper into 4 rectangles. Sketch 1 idea in each
rectangle rather than a storyboard.
Go for quantity, don’t worry about making these
beautiful, these are just for yourself.
Try to get beyond your initial idea.
Fast 4’s
Hang the sketches up as if in a gallery
or museum.
Then allow each person to present their
solution sketch.
Present Sketches at Table

Give each person 4 dots to create heat maps/areas of
interest on the sketches.
The decider access the heat maps and is given 1 dot
to choose a winner after the team members vote.
Vote on Designs
The winning sketch’s owners’ present
their solution sketches to the large group.
Final Shareout to Group
30 mins

  • 3. Introductions - Meet the team Who is joining us this week and what are you hoping to get out of this process? 10 min
  • 5. Write with a thick dark sharpie. Be succinct. One idea per sticky note. Not too broad, and not too narrow. If you donʼt write it down it canʼt be voted on. HMWʼs are the life blood of a Design Sprint, without them you wonʼt get very far. Too Broad Too Narrow Just Right Writing “How Might We”
  • 6. More and more backpack shoppers are trying to answer questions about products through online research. Whereas, in the past, purchasing outdoor activity equipment that had stringent fit requirements was largely an in-store endeavor. Lately, consumers had expressed in increased desire for the convenience of online research and shopping for outdoor activity equipment, but their focus on stringent fit requirements has not decreased. Problem: they want to shop/purchase online, but how a backpack product fits on an individual's body is a critical component of the perceived quality of ownership experience Problem-Framing 10 mins
  • 7. How might we simulate an in-person, try-on experience online for shoppers looking to know how a backpack will sit on their body. Problem Statement 10 mins
  • 8. Lightning Talk Letʼs explore the problem space. Interview with a Hiker 10 min
  • 9. Start grouping ideas into categories. Don’t worry if the categories aren’t immediately apparent. Look for overlaps or duplicates to get started. Name each theme Affinity Mapping + Themes 15 min.
  • 10. Each team member gets 4 dots. The decider will vote with 2 dots. It’s ok to vote on your own. It’s ok to put more than one dot on the same note We’ll pay more attention to notes that have multiple votes, so think strategically We are not trying to get to one direction at this point in time Vote on the theme 10 min.
  • 11. 10 mins Fold your paper into 4 rectangles. Sketch 1 idea in each rectangle rather than a storyboard. Go for quantity, don’t worry about making these beautiful, these are just for yourself. Try to get beyond your initial idea. Fast 4’s
  • 12. Hang the sketches up as if in a gallery or museum. Then allow each person to present their solution sketch. Present Sketches at Table 10 mins
  • 13. 10 mins Give each person 4 dots to create heat maps/areas of interest on the sketches. The decider access the heat maps and is given 1 dot to choose a winner after the team members vote. Vote on Designs
  • 14. The winning sketch’s owners’ present their solution sketches to the large group. Final Shareout to Group 30 mins
