1. Rihanna (feat. Jay-z)Umbrella This song by Rihanna was the first song from her album; Good Girl Gone Bad. It was released on March 29th 2007 and features well known rap artist Jay-z. It was a very different direction for Rihanna compared to her girly girl image on her last album. Umbrella was a massive hit and remained number one in the UK for 10 weeks.

2. Here Rihanna starts of in a very voyeuristic pose. She’s wearing a very tight outfit, that just about covers what needs to be covered. Lighting and smoke Appears from behind her and gives her a very strong entrance image to her new good girl gone bad image. She is posing in a very confident manner and seems very sure of her attractiveness image. A big contrast to her old look.

3. Jay-z appears at the centre of the screen surrounded by women who also are very seductively dressed. Visual effects are used behind them to create an image of pouring rain. It’s all quite an impressive start to a music video. This often appears in music videos ‘men being surrounded by women’ it is seen to boost their ego.

4. Throughout the video she makes lots of eye contact with the audience, and the camera.

5. Here computer animated effects are used to create the image of rain/water falling and being splashed about. In this part of the video Rihanna isn’t dressed so sexually and instead is wearing a simple white short dress, which in comparison to what she wears during the video is a lot less revealing.

6. This is a very striking pose and yet still has a lot of sexual connotations. and yet another outfit change. In my opinion its all a bit slutty, but I suppose its all about her good girl gone bad image. Her legs are made to look ever so striking in this part of the video. Also the use of the umbrella creates a relationship between Rihanna and the lyrics of the song.

7. We then see footage of Rihanna naked covered top to bottom in silver paint, positioned in some very strange and seductive poses. Of course this is another very voyeuristic pose. The light around her ensures that she is the main focus.

8. Goodwin identified that some record companies demand lots of close-ups of the artists face. This applies to this video as we can see.

9. The final scene in the music video is of Rihanna and some male dancer’s carrying out a choreographed dance routine. Rihanna is positioned central with the use of camera work and editing. All the dancers are dressed all in black which makes sure she stands out.

10. Rihanna seemed to keep this good girl gone bad image throughout the rest of her music videos e.g. Disturbia, Shut Up and Drive and Please Don’t Stop TheMusic. She also dresses and keeps the same sort of image in everyday life as well. This is what Goodwin identified as iconography .
