Client and Candidate Measurement   I have skills in understanding a client’s organisation, culture and values, so can submit candidates with appropriate  behavioural, cultural, personal and professional mix   On candidates, I trust my insights and judgement, and support these with skilled reference taking  My cv’s are written with care (each takes about 3 hours); each has a Summary and Appraisal page   If a client wants psychometric tests, handwriting, blood tests etc to throw additional light on a candidate, or identify unexpected personality problems, I support the search for insights and think the client should undertake it and so feel satisfied
  Ethics and integrity   Terms too often and too lightly used. What do they  mean? I think of personal, professional and intellectual integrity, combined with words such as honesty, realism, directness, trust   In search, this applies in:   Presenting one’s capabilities and track record to client  Managing client confidences Observing off limits – always Matching client and candidate expectations of each other Not trying to fit round pegs into square holes All fee agreements straight down the line Quality of reference checking Negotiating salary and terms  Personal trustworthiness and decency of behaviour
Communication between client, consultant and candidates   Everyone’s information and expectations must be aligned. Clients say they are rarely satisfied with how their search consultants communicate. The closer consultant and client work together, the better.  I email to the client a weekly update of all people & companies targeted and spoken with, all interviews planned and conducted. I produce one-page comparative analysis of candidates.   The consultant must keep close to client and candidate right to the end of a search.   
WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A SEARCH CONSULTANT?   When you hire a search consultant, how do you assess quality and value? Are you buying the services of a firm or a consultant? Can a consultant who lacks attributes or experience see and value these in others? Does he or she excite your trust to find the right person? Attributes and competencies for high quality search Experience : life, people, business, management, cultures  Maturity, judgement, quality of mind :  ability to understand a business or organisation, contribute to client’s thinking, add value Technical knowledge : in all functions Current in business thinking : can find people at the front edge of world level competitiveness,  Insight into people : somehow knows much about a candidate - how intelligent; how much of a leader; personality; interpersonal skills; propensity to be trusted and valued Integrity, values , d ecency : both in the search consultant, and sought in candidates by clients    
  Open mindedness  about people: sees people for what they are Thorough, imaginative, persistent research Behavioural psychology:  enough knowledge to understand and align  client and candidate attitudes and cultures Multicultural, international  experience in search & line management HR : awareness of objectives, processes, work cultures, organisation Passion : interest, care and energy to get it right on behalf of the client Can sell  client company strongly without overstatement Intellectual and leadership  ability to align everyone’s expectations Many of these are ordinary attributes.
